UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
THOMAS IVILSON, JR, OF \VASHINGTON, INDIANA.
MINE-VENTILATOR.
EJPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,034, dated August 25, 1885.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WILsoN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Daviess and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mine-Ventilators, of which the following isa specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to machines for ventilating mines; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved machine for ventilating mines. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is an end View taken from the end at which the slides are operated. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line a; 00 in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line y y in Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section on the line 2 e in Fig. 2.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the incasement or structure in which the fan or suction-blower is erected. One side of the casing forms a bearing for one end of the faushaft B, and the other bearing is upon the longitudinal beam 0. The incasement is provided with three chambers or compartments. The mid dlc compartment is the fan-chamber D, and in this chamber the fan or blower E operates, either to supply air to a mine or to exhaust air therefrom, when necessary, which latter operation is performed without reversing the fan, and by simply manipulating the slides and doors with which the incasement is provided.
The middle or fan chamber is provided with the fan or blower E, and is provided, also, with the doors G H I J at one end. The doors G I are the lower doors of the pairs of doors, and both open inwardly and rest in inclined positions against inclined strips K, secured to the walls of the middle or fan chamber. The doors H J open upwardly and outwardly.
The side chambers or compartments, L M, are located one on each side of the fan-chamber, and are constructed in the same incasement. These side chambers, L M, communicate with the fan-chamber through side openings, N, in the partitions N, and these side openings, N, are provided with sliding doors P P above and below the beam 0. The lower sliding doors, P, are provided with hooklatches which engage eyes in the under side of the beams O to hold them in place when they are closed. A A are side doors for the side chambers.
The inclosurc is placed over the air-shaft, and when it is desired to discharge or force air into the mine the hinged side doors, A A, with which the outer case is provided in its opposite sides, are opened.
The sliding doors I P, the middle slide, E, in the bottom of the incasement, and the doors G H I J should be open, and the fan set in operation. The air may be discharged from any point in the periphery of the fan case. I do not therefore confine myself to any specific location for the doors in its periphery.
To exhaust the air from the mine, close the doors A A and the sliding door E, and open the hinged doors G H I .I and the side slides, B B, in the bottom of the incasement, and start the fan, and the air will be drawn from the mine and discharged into the open air.
By this construction the air can be reversed throughout a mine of any extent of territory in a few minutes time without stopping the engine or interfering with it in the least, so that the circulation of the air may be constantly maintained in the mine.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination of the incasement having the middle and side compartments, doors for the side compartments, openings commu nicating with the side and middle compartments, sliding doors for said openings, and openings in the lower sides of the compartments, and slides for said bottom openings, and the blower located. in the middle compartment, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the middle compartment having the horizontally-hinged end doors, and bottom and side openings, and slides for said openings, of the side compartments having bottom slides and side doors In testimony that I claim the foregoing as and the blower located in the middle compart- I my own I have hereto aifixed my signature 1o ment, substantially as described. in presence of two witnesses.
3. The combination with the middle compartment having the hinged end doors and THOMAS WILSON bottom and side openings with slides, of the Witnesses: side compartments having bottom slides and JAMES C. LAVELLE,
side doors, substantially as specified. JOHN A. GEETING.
