,NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM R. WOOD, OF MAPLETON, IOWA.
SPRING FOR BUGGY-TOPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,909, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed June 27, 1885.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. W001), a citizen of the United States, residing at Mapleton, in the county of Mononaand State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Equalizing-Split] gs for Buggy-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a side elevation of a buggy-top with my equalizing-spring applied thereto, and Fig. 2 adetail view in perspective of the spring.
The present invention has for its object to provide means for equalizing the weight of buggy-tops when thrown back, thus preventing the breakage of the bow when coming in contact with the rest at back of seat; and the invention consists in the employment of a spring-arm against which the back bow of the buggy-top can rest when the top of buggy is thrown back, the springartn being constructed in one piece, with an eye at one end for pivoting it, and at the other end a spring-yoke to connect with the back bow of the buggy-top, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
1n the accompanying drawings, A represents the springarm, pivoted atits lower end to the frame of the buggy-top, as shown at a. the arm at its pivotal end being formed with (No model.)
an eye, I), for the purpose. Upon the upper or opposite end of the arm A is formed a suitable yoke, c, for the back bow, d, of the bu ggytop to rest against. The spring-bar A, as will be noticed, is slightly curved, to insure its action as an equalizing-spring when the buggytop is thrown back, the spring resting at or near its middle upon the projection at the back corner of the buggy-seat, distributing the weight of top at either end of the bow, thus preventing injury or breakage thereof at center. The springarm A, as will be seen, is complete in itself, the eye I) and yoke 0 being formed on the ends of the arm, thus enabling it to be placed in the market and readily applied to the buggy-top by any one, without the use of clips, rivets, or other devices required to attach the upper end to the back bow, all that is necessary being to spring the yoke 0 around the same.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An equalizing spring arm for the back bow of buggy tops, formed at one end with an eye and at the opposite end with a spring-yoke;
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence, of two witnesses. 7
WILLIAM It. WOOD.
