SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,769, dated August 18, 1885.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH HURRLE, of Oneida, in the county of Madison, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Supports for Thills of Vehicles, of which the following, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to that class of thillsupports in which a brace is movably connected to the forward part of the vehicle so as to fold therefrom when said brace is not in use, and to project thereon and support the thills in an elevated position when required; and the invention consists in an improved construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter more fully explained, and set forth in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a vehicle provided with my invention, and showing the operation of the same in supporting the thills in an elevated position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken at right angles to the axle. Fig. 3 is a detached enlarged perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 4 illustrates modifications of the location of the same in relation to the vehicle and thills.

a represents an elongated metal plate,which is to be secured either to the crossbar tof the thills T, and preferably to the under side thereof, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, or to the forward part of the vehicle, preferably to the headbloek h, as represented in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

On one end of the plate a is swiveled a post, 6, and on the latter is pivoted the brace b. The swivel of the post, in conjunction with the pivot of the brace, produces a universal joint, which allows the brace to turn and swing in all directions, and either fold onto the plate a, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, or project from the same so as to rest with its free end on the head-block h or other suitable part of the front of the vehicle in case the plate a is attached to the thills. with an eye, 1', for engagement with a lug or suitable catch, 8, on the part on which said end of the brace rests when in position for supporting the thills in an elevated position.

To the end of the plate at opposite that to which the post is pivoted is affixed a catch, 0, for engaging andretaining the free end of the brace b when folded back toward the plate a, as represented in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

To the central portion of the plate a is secured a lug, d, which stands in such a position in relation to the post 6 and catch 0 as to press against the lever from the side opposite to that which rests against the catch 0, and thus retain the lever in the said catch. The lever has sufficient elasticity to allow it to spring across the lug d and into the catch 0, and it is thus held securely and compactly out of the way when not required for use, and when the plate a is attached to the under side of the cross-bar of the thills and the brace b folded, asshown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, said plate and brace are effectually concealed.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with the thills and forward part of the vehicle, the plate a, the brace b, pivoted on said plate, and the catch 0 for holding the brace in its folded position, as set forth.

2. In combination with the thills and forward part of the vehicle, the plate a, the brace I), pivoted on one end of said plate by a uni versal joint, the catch 0, affixed to the opposite end of the plate a, and the lug (1, attached to the central portion of said plate, substantially as described and shown.
