Description

UNITED STATES APATluvT OFFICE.
M. C. BURLEIGH, OF SOMEBSW'ORTH, NEW 'HAM-PSHIRE.
'l MPnovE-'M ENT IN MoLnlNG sTovE-GRIDDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 32,465., dated J une 4, 186.1.
o all whom it may concern.-
Be it. known that I, M. C. BURLEIGH, of Somersworth, in the county of Stratford-and State of New Hampshire, have invented'a new and useful Improvement in Molding Flater Smooth Top Griddles for Cooking; Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following isl a full, clear, and exact' description of the same, reference being had to the annexed draw'- ings, inaking a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a flask4 with the 'pattern ttedwithin it and pro vided w'ith my invention. Y Fig. 2 is a plan or top View of the pattern. Fig. 3 is a plan ortop viewof the handle by which the griddle is lifted or moved; "cF-ig; is an'nnderview` of the same. Fig, 5 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in providing the pattern with va tongue oran adjustable plate,sub-.. stantially as hereinafter described,- whereby the griddle may 'be cast without anycore` boxes, wires, or chills, which is necessary in the ordinary plan of molding in order to formV a means to-connect the handle to the griddle for the purpose of moving the latter when required.
To enable those skilled in the artto fully understand and construct my invention, Iwill proceed to describe it.
A represents the pattern, which is made in the usual way, lprovided with a recess or sunken portion, a, to form a cavity in the casting to receive the end ofthe handle. This cavity may be of the Vusual form, but it is provided with a movable tongue, B, which con'- sttutes the' gist of the invention, as referred to ,in the recital of invention. This tongue is formed of a small strip of wood or metal, which is fitted in an oblique slot in the pattern, so
proper position;
as to project a certain distance within the recessal of the'pattern, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This tongue, when fitted in the pattern, is
Viiush with its under surface a', and the outer endofthe tongue is flush or about iiush with the face side bof the pattern. The recess a has inclined sides, as shown in Fig. 1,and 'the recess is sufficiently large to receive the end of the handle C, which'is provided wiith a recess, c, of such dimensions that it will receive the tongueB if the end of the handle beinserted in the recess a, The handle C is cast in theA usual way, and is of the ordinary form.
The mold isformed as follows: The lower flask, D, is iilled with sand, and the pattern A, is bedded in the ask D,face side down, and the'- tongue B inserted in the pattern :in the The upper flask, E, isthen placed on the ask D and packed with. sand,
and is then removed, and the tongue B is withdrawn from the pattern and the pattern drawn from flask D. l`The fiask E is then placed on D and the mold is completed, the recess formed in the sand bythe tongue B -causing a lip to be east in the recess of the griddle for the end of the handle tolitl under, and enabling the griddle to belifted and moved by the handle.
Thus it will be seenthat by the use of thc tongue B the lip may be cast without any co'rcbox, and all wires and chills dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, what I .claim as new, and desire to secure by` Letters Patent, isy The employment or use,'with the lpattern A,
ofthe movable tongu'e B, substantially :as described, fitted in the pattern and in such relation with its recess a as to admit of a lip being cast with the griddle, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
M. o. BURLEIGE Witnesses:
'C'. A. WENTwonTH, M.V C. RUssELL.
