Description

'L. S. BUNNELL. PIPE BUTTS FOR ENGINE HOSE.
No. 32,464. Patented Jun 4, 1861 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L. s. BUNNELL, or TROY, NEW YORK.
PIPE-BUTTS..
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,464, dated June 4, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L. S. BUNNELL, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and .useful Improvement in Pipe Butts for the Hose of Fire-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is an end view of my invention. Fig. 2, a side View of the same, Fig. 3, a longitudinal central section of the same, taken in the line a, m, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to enable a person to attach while the engine is at work, pipes of different sizes as may be required, to the butt of the hose, without being eX- posed to the water.
The invention consists in having the butt at the discharge end of the hose formed of two parts connect-ed by a joint and secured together when closed by means of a catch or fastening, whereby the outer end or part of the butt to which the pipe is attached may, at any time, be turned around out of the way of the stream and the pipe detached and another attached with the greatest facility and without being exposed to the water.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the butt at the discharge end of the hose. This butt is of metal of tubular form with a female screw a, cut in one end to receive the male screw of the hose. The butt is formed of two parts 6, c, the outer part I), being connected to 0, by a hinge or joint (Z, so that part Z), when closed will abut against 0, and form a water-tight connection when held in position by a catch or fastening B. This catch or fastening B, is formed of a bar 0, secured by a bolt 7', in a projection g, on the part 0, of the butt and provided at its outer end with a hook h,
which fits overa projection 2', on the part b, at a point opposite the hinge or joint (Z, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. At the inner end of the bar a, there is a screw j, by adjusting which the hook h, of bar 6, may be prevented from slipping off the projection g, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, the inner end of the screw j, bearing against the part c.
On the outer part of the part b, of the butt A, there is a screw is, which receives the end of the pipe, the latter being constructed as usual and screwed on the part Z).
From the above description it. will be seen that in order to detach the pipe from b, and attach another one thereto all that is required is to turn the screw is, so that the hook k, may be moved free from the projection '0'. The part b, may then be turned around so that the pipe will be out of line with the stream of water issuing from the part c, of the butt, and the attendant can detach the pipe from b, and attach another one thereto with the, greatest facility and without being in the least exposed to the water.
This invention may be applied to the ordinary butts atthe discharge end of hose by simply sawing said butts into two parts, and having rings-or bands a b fitted thereon, for the purpose of forming the joint (l, and the projections g, i. In constructing new butts however the projections would be cast with the butts.
An annular packing c is fitted in the outer end of the part c, for the inner end of part b, to abut against and form a watertight joint.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is,
Forming the butt A, of two parts 7), 0, connected by a hinge or joint (Z, and provided with a catch or fastening B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
. L. S. BUNNELL.
