' WI TJV' ESSES nates myimproved wagon-box.
Illnrrnn p drains Partnr rrrcn .rt of Letters Patent No. 324,558, dated .August 18, 18585.
Application led April 9.7, ISPS. (No modchip Zh @ZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, Wimmer H. JnNKrNs, a citizen o1" the United States, residing` at Tazewell Court-IIouse, in the county of Tazewell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tagen- Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which 'it appertains to vmake and use the saine.
construction, durable, and which maybe easily i knocked down or taken apart and again put together without great exercise of strength.
Vith these `endsin view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts,which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings heretoannexed, A desig- B is the bot` tom or bed of the same7 which is provided at or near the ends with cross pieces or braces C C, and at or near the middle with additional cross-.braces D D, all of which extend beyond the sides or edges of the bed, as shownC The end braces (l C are provided at their outer ends with shoulders E E, and the projecting or extending ends of the braces D D also have shoulders F, formed. by flanges G, connecting` the ends ofthe said braces, as shown. p
H H are the sides of the wagonbed, which are adapted to rest upon the braces (l C and DD, between the shoulders E and F of the said braces and the outer edges of the wagonbed. The said sides are provided with vertical braces or standards I, the lower ends of which are formed or provided with forwardlyextending hooksJ, adapted to catch over the ends of the braces G and D, and thereby connect the sides to the bed or bottom of the wagonbox securely against vertical displacement.` t
The shoulderblocks E and the flanges G, forming the shoulders F, are secured to the braces C and D, respectively, by means of vertical bolts, the lower ends of which are equipped with nuts K, which are held in position and prevented from turning by means of the hooks J upon the lower ends of .the standards I, as will be clearly seen in the drawings hereto annexed.
The sides H H of the wagon-box are provided on their inner sides, near their ends, with vertical cleats L L, forming guides for the end-gates lli M, which are constructed with centrally-located downwardly-extending bolts N N, adapted to pass through openings O inthe ends of the wagon-bed, and to be sccured by means of suitable hand or thumb nuts, I l. YVhcn thelatter are tightened, the endgates are not only attached securely in their respective positions, but they serve to attach or connect the sides securely to the bottom of the wagon-bed.
From thevi'orcgoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood.
The construction is simple and inexpensive, and it admits of the sides and end-gates being detached without difficulty or the exertion of much force.
Having t-hus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statcsl. In a wagon-box, the combination, with the bed or bottom having transverse braces or crosspieces at or near the ends and center, said braces being provided at their outer ends with perpendicular retainingshoulders, of the detachable sides set against said shoulders upon the cross -pieccs and having vertical braces or standards, the lower ends of which are provided with forwardlyextending hooks, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. As an improvement 4in wagon-boxes, the combination ot' the bed or bottom having transverse braces near the ends and center, said end braces being provided with the per- IOO pendicular retaining-shoulders at their outer ends, and the longitudinal retaining flanges secured upon and connecting the middle braces and set against the sides of the body, o'f the detachable sides set against said shoulders and flange having vertical standards provided with forwardly-extending hooks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. As an improvement in Wagon-boxes, the combination of the bed or bottom having transverse braces or cross pieces secured to its under side at and near its ends and middle, said cross-pieces being provided with the retaining shoulders and lianges, as described, secured to said cross-pieces by means of vertical bolts having nuts attheirlower ends, and the detachable side pieces having standards provided at their lower ends,with forwardlyextending hooks engaging the sides of said nuts to prevent them from turning, substan- `tially as and for'the purpose set forth.
4. As an improvement in wagon-beds, the combination of the bed or bottom having transverse flanged or shouldered braces, the detachable sides having standards provided at their lower ends with forwardlyextending hooks, and having vertical cleats on their inner sides at their front and rear ends, and the detachable end-gates having bolts adapted to eX- tend through the wagon bedv or bottom and provided vwith suitable fastening nuts, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY JENKINS.
