  • An extension light of the character described comprising a cylindrical handle in one end of which is screwed an electric light bulb and the other end of which terminates in a V-shaped configuration adapted to receive coils of the electric cordof the said extension light when the light is not in use, and a rectangular sheet metal deflector having closed ends and having one end secured to said one end of the handle, said deflector having a hinged wireguard thereon, as well as an adjustable coupling to which is secured the extension light supporting hook that is adjustably secured to a centrally located rigid wire of the said wire guard by means of a coupling that is hingedly mounted on one closed end of the said rectangular sheet ietal deflector, the end of the wire guard which is farthest from said V-shaped configuration having a substantially U-shaped recess therein whereby the electric cord can be wound substantially lengthwise of the handle with one portion in the V-shaped configuration of the handle and another portion in the U-shaped recess of the wire guard.

INVENTOR A ndre w L eufheuser United States Patent Andrew This invention relates to extension lights, and, more particularly, to that type of extension light usually found in garages and the like where mechanics and their helpers must very often have additional light for the repair and/ or adjustment of automotive vehicles.
Hardly anything is more bothersome and time-consuming to a person than to find the cord of an extension light hopelessly entangled when he is in a hurry to make some minor adjustment on an automobile in a place that must be lighted. This entanglement of the cord of an extension light can hardly be helped, since none of the lights of this type now on the market is provided with any means for holding the cord when not in use without the attachment of cumbersome structure.
Accordingly, a primary object of this invention is to provide an extension light around which the cord may be wrapped when not in use.
Another object of this invention is to provide an extension light that does not require the attachment of additional structure in order to wrap the cord around the same when the light is not in actual use.
Another object of this invention is to provide an extension light that may be used in a normal manner as any other extension light, and at the same time to provide an efficient and practical means of securement of the cord when the lamp is not in use.
A further object of this invention is to provide an extension light that has the outer end of the handle terminating in a V-shap'ed member adapted to receive a plurality of windings of the cord of the lamp when the same is not in actual use.
Other objects and purposes of this invention will become apparent to persons familiar with this type of equipment upon referring to the accompanying drawings and upon reading the following specification.
For illustration of my invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a pictorial View of this invention.
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view of this invention taken along line 2-2 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view of this invention taken along line 3-3 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 4 is a side view of the lamp end of this invention.
FIGURE 5 is a pictorial view of alternate construction of the lamp end of this invention.
For convenience, and without imposing any limitations whatsoever on the construction of this new and novel extension lamp, there is shown in the drawing a cylindrical handle 8 of the extension lamp. The handle is provided with the usual electric bulb socket, in which a light bulb 9 is screwed, as well as an extension cord outlet 10. The outer end of the aforesaid cylindrical handle, which is usually made from hard rubber or its equivalent, terminates in a V-shaped configuration 11, in which is wrapped a portion of the lamp cord 12. The light guard 13 of the lamp embodies the usual sheet metal light deflector 14, on one side of which is swingably secured a wire guard 15 by the hinge 16, that is on one side of the aforesaid light deflector 14.
The outer end of the light deflector, which in this embodiment of the invention is rectangular in form, is provided with an extension light supporting hook 17 that is hingedly secured to the center of the closed end 18 of the aforesaid sheet metal light deflector 14 at 19, as
one can see on looking at FIGURES 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing. The aforesaid light supporting hook 17 is adjustable by reason of its novel construction that will be fully understood on reexamination of FIGURE 2 or 3 where it is seen that the threaded end 21) of the hook is engaged in the coupling 21 locked by the nut 22.
The wire guard 15 is secured in place after the light bulb 9 has been screwed into its socket by having that longitudinal edge 23 that is directly opposite the hinge 16 held by the rolled edge 24 of the sheet metal light deflector 14, which is secured in place on the neck 25 of this invention by means of the screw-secured clamp 26, or its equivalent.
This novel invention may also be constructed with alternate form of securement of the previously detailed extension light supporting hook 17, which in this alternate form is shown in FIGURE 5 of the drawing, where it is seen that the aforesaid inward end 20 of the extension light supporting hook 17 is threaded into a coupling 27 that, in turn, receives the threaded end 28 of a centrally located rigid wire 29, that is part of the aforesaid wire guard 15. In this alternate construction of my invention I have replaced the rectangular sheet metal deflector 14 with a deflector 36' that has a rounded end 31 in place of the aforesaid closed end 18. It is now obvious from looking at the drawing that when this extension light is hung on any desired object by its supporting hook 17 that it may be rotated in any necessary position and secured firmly in that position by means of either the coupling 19 or 27, depending upon which way the supporting hook has been manufactured.
One can now understand from the above detailed d scription of this novel invention of mine that I have provided an extension light having a new means of holding the lamp cord 12 when the extension light is not in actual use. The cord is obviously wrapped around the cylindrical handle in a longitudinal manner with the coils of the cord in the apex of the V-shaped outer end of the cylindrical handle as well as around the wire guard end of the invention, thereby meeting both the objects and the following claims or" this invention.
Since numerous minor variations of these preferred embodiments of my invention will now become apparent to those skilled in the art, it is not my intention to confine the invention to the precise form herein shown, but rather to limit it in terms of the appended claims.
Having thus described and disclosed preferred embodiments of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An extension light of the character described, comprising a cylindrical handle in one end of which is screwed an electric light bulb and the other end of which terminates in a V-shaped configuration adapted to receive coils of the electric cord of the said extension light when the light is not in use, and a sheet metal deflector having one end secured to said One end of the handle, said deflector having a hinged wire guard thereon, as well as an adjustable extension light supporting hook, the end of the wire guard which is farthest from said V-shapcd configuration having a substantially U-shapedl *ecess therein whereby the electric cord can be wound substantially lengthwise of the handle with one portion in the V-shaped configuration of the handle and another portion in the U-shaped recess of the wire guard.
2. An extension light of the character described, comprising a cylindrical handle in one end of which is screwed an electric light bulb and the other end of which terminates in a V-shaped configuration adapted to receive coils of the electric cord of the said extension light when the light is not in use, and a rectangular sheet metal deflector having one end secured to said one end of the handle, said deflector having a hinged wire guard thereon, as well as an adjustable extension light supporting hook, the end of the wire guard which is farthest from said V-shaped configuration having a substantially V-shaped recess therein whereby the electric cord can be wound substantially lengthwise of the handle with one portion in the V-shaped configuration of the handle and another portion in the U-shaped recess of the wire guard.
3. An extension light of the character described, comprising a cylindrical handle in one end of which is screwed an electric light bulb and the other end of which terminates in a V-shaped configuration adapted to receive coils of the electric cord of the said extension light when the light is not in use, and a rectangular sheet metal deflector having closed ends and having one end secured to said one end of the handle, said deflector having a hinged wire guard thereon, as well as an adjustable extension light supporting hook that is hingedly mounted on one closed end of the said rectangular sheet metal deflector, the end of the wire guard which is farthest from said V-shaped configuration having a substantially U-shaped recess therein whereby the electric cord can be wound substantially lengthwise of the handle with one portion in the V-shaped configuration of the handle and another portion in the U-shaped recess of the wire guard.
4. An extension light of the character described, comprising a cylindrical handle in one end of which is screwed an electric light bulb and the other end of which terminates in a V-shaped configuration adapted to receive coils of the electric cord of the said extension light when the light is not in use, and a rectangular sheet metal deflector having closed ends and having one end secured to said one end of the handle, said deflector having a hinged Wire guard thereon, as well as an adjustable coupling to which is secured the extension light supporting hook that is hingedly mounted on one closed end of the said rectangular sheet metal deflector, the end of the wire guard which is farthest from said V-shaped configuration having a substantially U-shaped recess therein whereby the electric cord can be Wound substantially lengthwise of the handle with one portion in the V-shaped configuration of the handle and another portion in the U-shaped recess of the wire guard.
5. An extension light of the character described, comprising a cylindrical handle in one end of which is screwed an electric light bulb and the other end of which terminates in a V-shaped configuration adapted to receive coils of the electric cordof the said extension light when the light is not in use, and a rectangular sheet metal deflector having closed ends and having one end secured to said one end of the handle, said deflector having a hinged wireguard thereon, as well as an adjustable coupling to which is secured the extension light supporting hook that is adjustably secured to a centrally located rigid wire of the said wire guard by means of a coupling that is hingedly mounted on one closed end of the said rectangular sheet ietal deflector, the end of the wire guard which is farthest from said V-shaped configuration having a substantially U-shaped recess therein whereby the electric cord can be wound substantially lengthwise of the handle with one portion in the V-shaped configuration of the handle and another portion in the U-shaped recess of the wire guard.

Claims (1)

1. AN EXTENSION LIGHT OF THE CHARACTER DESCRIBED, COMPRISING A CYLINDRICAL HANDLE IN ONE END OF WHICH IS SCREWED AN ELECTRIC LIGHT BULB AND THE OTHER END OF WHICH TERMINATES IN A V-SHAPED CONFIGURATION ADAPTED TO RECEIVE COILS OF THE ELECTRIC CORD OF THE SAID EXTENSION LIGHT WHEN THE LIGHT IS NOT IN USE, AND A SHEET METAL DEFLECTOR HAVING ONE END SECURED TO SAID ONE END OF THE HANDLE, SAID DEFLECTOR HAVING A HINGED WIRE GUARD THEREON, AS WELL AS AN ADJUSTABLE EXTENSION LIGHT SUPPORTING HOOK, THE END OF THE WIRE GUARD WHICH IS FARTHEST FROM SAID V-SHAPED CONFIGURATION HAVING A SUBSTANTIALLY V-SHAPED RECESS THEREIN WHEREBY THE ELECTRIC CORD CAN BE WOUND SUBSTANTIALLY LENGTHWISE OF THE HANDLE WITH ONE PORTION IN THE V-SHAPED CONFIGURATION OF THE HANDLE AND ANOTHER PORTION IN THE U-SHAPED RECESS OF THE WIRE GUARD.
