Description

J. E. BERL CRIB LINER March Z2, 1966 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed May l5, 1964 JOHN ELMER BEHL INVENTOR ATTORNEY United States Patent O 3,241,158 Y CRIB LINER John E. Berl, 704 Hatherleigh Road, Baltimore, Md. Filed May 13, 1964, Ser. No. 366,967 13 Claims. (Cl. 5-93) This invention relates generally to a means of protecting surfaces, more particularly it pertains to a means of protecting the inner surfaces of cribs for children wherever dispersed.
It is the object of this invention to provide a cushion type protective pad for children confined to a crib whereby to avoid the possibility of injury to the childs head, arms or legs by contact with the sides and/or ends of the crib including the spindles and/or rails in its conscious or involuntary movements.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pad construction for the several sides of a. crib which can be instantly swung from an operative position inside the crib to the outside of the crib without restricting the movement of the crib sides in cases of emergency.
Still another objectof this invention is to provide a sanitary padded crib liner having `a removable cushion rubber insert so as to allow thorough sterilization and laundering.
To provide a crib pad which extends over and is susF pended from the crib rail and revolves thereabout, is yet another object of this invention.
Other objects and attendant advantages of this invention will become more readily apparent and understood from the following detailed specification and accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is la rear elevation of a crib side pad or liner incorporating features of this invention;
FIG. 2 is a front elevation thereof;
FIG. 3 is a side elevation of the crib liner shown installed on a crib rail; and
FIG. 4 is an enlarged `fragmentary sectional view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 1.
Referring now to the details of the invention, reference numeral indicates generally the improved crib liner. This liner 1t) consists of a pad 12 of absorbing fabric to which is attached a .pocket 34. The pocket 34 receives a synthetic rubber cushion 58 approximately one inch in thickness.
The absorbing pad 12 is fabricated with two covers, an inner cover 16 and an outer cover 18 of heavy sateen. A prefer-able th-read count for this material is 96 X 60. Between these covers 16 and 18, there is inserted an extra heavy annel ller 20 which is napped on both sides. The combination of the two covers 16 and 13 and the filler 20 is quilted together with stitches 22 so as to avoid distortion and movement of the flannel insert.
A heavy twill binding tape 24 is sewn to the periphery of the pad 12 by means of .two rows of lock stitches 26. The pocket 34 is fabricated from a heavy Sateen to provide a face 36 and a one piece bottom and side strip 38 bound together with tape 40 and secured by stitching 42. The top of the pocket 34 is open and is bordered with binding .tape 44 secured by stitching 46 and thus provides for the insertion of the foam rubber cushion 58. This cushion 58 may be rounded at the corners to fit a rounded pad configuration as shown.
The pocket face 36 is reinforced inside with strips 48 of sateen secured by stitches 56 for the mounting of the male halves 52 of snap buttons.
To the lower portion of the pocket, tie tapes 54 are attached by a IStitching 56 preferably through into the reinforcing strips 48. These tapes are optionally used to secure .the liner pad 10 in the normal position inside 3,241,158 Patented Mar. 22, 1966 ice the crib for tying around the spindles and/or panels of the crib.
Three lengths or straps 28 of heavy duty webbing are attached by stitching 30 to the upper portion or ap 14 of the pad 12. The female sections 32 of the snap buttons are attached to these straps 28. The stra-ps 2S pass over the crib rail R and the snap buttons are fastened to their mates on the outer surface or face 36 of the pocket 34. In this manner, the webbing loops of the straps 2S provide a hinge effe-ct around the rail R. so .that the crib liner 10 can be instantly swung from within the crib to the outer side of the crib sides, the ends traveling through a 360 are in the direction of the curved arrow. The -sides of t-he crib can then be lowered for access within.
Each crib is lined with six pads or crib liners 10, a section at .the head and foot and two sections on each side, or the liners 10 can be so constructed so that one liner 1li will extend the entire length of the side sections, if so desired.
It will be noted that the flap 14 extends over the rail R of the crib `and does not interfere with the hinging feature in any way. The lower end of the pad 12 extends to the surface of the mattress M, .thus affording complete draft shielding and excellent complete padding all around the Icrib even to a standing child therein.
Obviously many modifications and variations of the present invention iare possible in light of the above teachings. It is, therefore, to be understood that with in the scope `of the appended claims the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described.
What is claimed is:
1. Safety padding for a side rail of a crib-.type bed, with said `side rail having an upper rail, comprising a pad member for extending along said raii interiorly of said bed and having a surface facing said side rail, means including a face member and a side strip secured thereto and to said surface of said pad member to form a pocket which is between said pad member and said side rail, cushion means positioned within said pocket, and means strapping said pad member to said upper rail of said side rail, whereby said safety padding can be swung about said upper rail .to the exterior of said bed.

9. Safety padding for a side rail of a crib-type bed, with said side rail having an upper rail, comprising padding including a pad member for extending along said side rail interiorly of said bed and having a surface facing said side rail, a face member and a side strip secured thereto and to said surface of said pad member to form a pocket which is between said -pad member and said side rail, cushion means positioned within said pocket, and means strapping said padding to said upper rail of said side rail.
10. Safety padding for a side rail of a crib-type bed, with said side rail having an upper rail, comprising padding including a pad member for extending along said side rail interiorly of said bed and having a surface facing said side rail, a face member and a si-de strip secured thereto and to said surface of said pad member to form a pocket which is between said pad member and said side rail, cushion means removably positioned within said pocket, and strap-ping means including straps for wrapping over said upper rail of said side rail, whereby said padding can be swung about said upper rail.
