SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,069, dated August 11, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEwIs J. Arwoon, of W'aterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improxement in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.

In Letters Patent No. 138,601, granted to me May 6, 1873, the chimney-holder occupies an elevated position above the screw-base, and it is held by columns, and the wick-tube is within a cylindrical guide that slides through the screw-base and is raised by a spring. In this lamp the sliding guide-cylinder is small and cannot be grasped in pulling the guidecylinder down in trimming or lighting the wick, but the fingers have to be applied to the ends of projecting arms.

My improvement is made for giving increased facility in moving the wick-tube up or down, and for rendering the burner less sensitive to drafts of air, and for preventing the fingers becoming soiled by the oil of the lamp, or injured by the ends of the arms. The appearance of the lamp is also improved.

I dispense with the sliding cylinder around the wick-tube, and cause such wick-tube to slide through the burner-base, and I extend the ratchet-case laterally between guidestanch ards connecting the chimney-holder to the burner-base, and outside of the burner base I provide a perforated skirt or auxiliary airdistributer that is large enough to slide down around the collar upon the reservoir. This skirt is grasped in drawing down the wicktube and ratchet-cap for trimming or lighting the wick.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the lamp-burner with the wick-tube and skirt drawn down. Fig. 2 is a section at right angles to Fig. 1, with the parts in their normal position. Fig. 3 is a plan below the line a: m, Fig. 1.

The screw-collar a is upon the lamp-reservoir, and it receives the base b of the burner. c c are standards connected at their lower ends to the base b, and at their upper ends to the chimney-holder c, and air-distributer d.

The wick-tube g is provided with a wick raiser, h, and the cap or casek incloses the wick-raiser wheels and is usually known as the ratchet-cap. From this ratchetcase there are lateral extensions i that pass between the standards 0 0. These extensionst' should be notched at their edges where they pass the standards a, so as to be guided thereby.

Between the burner-base a and the ratchetcase there is an expansive spring Z, that keeps the wick-tube in a normally-elevated position, but which spring allows the wick-tube and ratchetcase to be drawn down when desired. There is an open-Work sheet-metal skirt, m, of a more or less ornamental character, surrounding the guide-standards and connected to the outer ends of the arms 2'. This skirt at its upper end is of a size when elevated to set up against the under side of the chimney-holder,

and the lower end is sufficiently large to pass j freely down around the collar a, when the said skirt and the ratchetcase and wick-tube are drawn down to give access to the wick for trimming and lighting. It is preferable to provide a knurled head around the lower part of the skirt to facilitate handling. This skirt becomes an auxiliaryair-distributer and gives a handsome and finished appearance to the lamp, as" well as facilitating the raising and lowering of the Wick-tube.

I claim as my invention The combination, with the movable wicktube, wick-raiser, and ratchet case with lateral extensions, of the skirt attached to the said extensions, the chimney-holder, air-distributer, and cone, the standards supporting the chimney-holder, and the burner-base, substantially as set forth.
