L. J. ATWOOD.
. LAMP BURNER.
No. 324,068. Patented Aug. 11, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFF c LEiVIS ATWOOD, OF W'ATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
LAMP-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,068, dated August 11, 1885.
Application filed September 10, 1884.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that T, LEWIS J. A'rwoon, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
Lamp-burners have been made with three screw-sections below the chimney-holder, passing down into a cylindrical perforated body, and acting to raise the said holder when partially rotated. In theselamps it is found that the screw-sections become bent, and that they do not furnish a sufficiently rigid support to the chimney-holder when raised.
My invention relates to a peculiarly-constructed support for the chimney holder, whereby greater strength is obtained, and the chimney -holding supports do not interfere with the use of scissors in trimming the wick.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical. section of the lamp with the chimney-holder elevated. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan at the line :0 x.
The wiek-tube c, screw-base a, and perforated cylindrical body I) are similar to those before made use of. Around the tube cthere is placed a cylinder, d, that isfirmly attached at its lower end within'thescre'w-base a, and the upper endis slightly below the top of the wicktube. Around this cylinder d and within the body bis the metallic ring 6, preferably formed with a cylindrical flange, i, in contact with the exterior of such cylinder 01, and from opposite edges of this ring the incline connections it rise to and are connected with the chimney-holder Z, which holder is of any ordinary or desired construction, and there is a cone or deflector, on, as usual.
In the connections it there are either ribs or slots at an inclination, and there are projections at 0 upon the interior of the body I), acting with such ribs or slots, so that the chimney-holder will be raised by giving to it a partial turn. The incline connections are placed so that when raised they come opposite to the sides of the wick-tube, thereby giving opportunity for cutting the wick or for wiping it off.
This mode of making the parts insures great (No model.)
strength with comparatively thin metal, because the ring 6 supports thelower ends of the incline connections, and is itself supported by the cylinder d, and if any pieces of carbon fall into the body of the burner this ring lifts them to a point where they are easily removed. I
The air-distributor may be partially upon the interior portion of the chimney-holding ring, but I prefer to attach the same to the top of the cylinder (1, as seen at p. This allows the incline connections to be moved between the edge of the air-distributor and the interior of the body I).
Usually therewill be perforations in the connections 70, so as not to interfere with the passage of air, and also perforations in the cylinder (1, to allow air to pass up to the base of the flame.
I do not claim a burner in which the deflector and chimney-holder are raised by the action of inclines connected with the chimneyholder, and a cylinder within which such inclines are received, as the same are shown in Letters Patent Nos. 66,635 and 37,281.
I do not herein lay claim 'to a cylinder around the wick-tube, and inclines by which the chimneyholder is raised, as the same are set forth in my application No. 142,552, filed September 10, 1884.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, in a lamp-burner, of the screw-base a, perforated body b, guidecylinder (1, ring- 6, connections 70, extending upwardly from the edges of the ring d, and having inclined indentations or slots, the projectious 0, and the chimney-holder Z, substantially as set forth.
2. The chimney holder 1 and deflector, in combination with the incline connections is, ring a, cylinder (1, wick-tube c, and air-distributer connected with the upper end of the cylinder d, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 30th day of August A. D.
L. J. ATWOOD. Witnesses:
It. T. LATTIN, B. B. BRISTOL.
