UNITED STATES 'ATENT OFFICE.
LENIS J. ATWOOD, OF XVATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
LAMP-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,067, dated August 11, 1885.
Application filed September 10, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, Lewis J. ATWOOD, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Lamp-Bnrners, of which the following is a specification.
Lamp-burners have been made with a cylindrical guide around the wick-tube, and upon this a sleeve-slide having arms that extend to the chimney-holder. In a burner of this kind the heat is liable to be conducted by the cylindrical guide down to the lower part of the wick-tube andto the reservoir.
My present invention has for its object the ventilation of the burner and the production of a guide that will give a regular amount of friction for holding the chimney in an elevated position, and for allowing it to be moved up or down with freedom and regularity.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of the lamp-burner complete, with the chimney-holder raised. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan at theline a: x, and Fig. 3shows the blank from which the guide is by preference formed.
The burner-base b and wick-tube a are of usual construction, and the foraminous shell 0 is generally provided for the chimney-holder (1 to rest upon when moved down to its normal position. 6 is the deflector resting at its lower edge upon the chimney-holder.
The disk i is, by preference, perforated. It surrounds the wick-tube near its upper end, and between this and the base I) there are the vertical guide-bars I. These are attached at their bottom ends to the base a, and by preference they are made from bars that project from the edges of the disk-blank, Fig. 3, and are turned down parallel to each other and to the wick-tube.
The frictional slider n is provided with arms 8, extending to the chimney-holder d. This slider 11 is around the bars Z, and it is preferable to make said slider of a disk or plate with holes in it, through which the bars Zpass, and these holes are to be cut so that the tongues n will be turned down parallel with each other and form friction-guides, running against the surfaces of the bars [when the chimney-holder is raised or lowered. The air-distributer r is beneath the deflector and within and connected to the chimney-holder.
In this construction the disk 7; is above the slider 12, and the parts cannot become separated. If, however, it is desired to lift the slider and chimney-holder off, then the slider must be made as a ring outside and surround ing the range of bars Z.
I do not claim guides around the wick-tube upon which the upper part of the lamp is guided as it is raised and lowered;and in my applications Nos. 142,552 and 142,553, filed September 10, 1884, the chimney-holders and deflectors are capable of being elevated but the peculiar devices for effecting that object differ from those herein described.
4 I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the flat wick-tube and the screw-base connected to the same, of a disk, 2, around the upper part of the wicktube, vertical bars connecting the same with the base, a slider around the bars,a chimneyholder, and arms extending from the slider to such chimney-holder,substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a lamp-burner, of a screw-base, a flat wiclctube, a range of vertical bars around the wick-tube, the disk t, connecting the upper ends of the bars and the wick-tube, a slider having yielding frictional bearings upon such bars, a chimney-holder, and arms connecting the same to the slider and the perforated air-distributor r, and the deflector e above the air-distributer, substantially as specified.
Signed by me this 30th day of August, A. D. 1884.
L. J. ATWOOD.
