SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,911, dated August 11, 1885.
Application filed May 15, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. OAHILL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lenox, in the county of Berkshireand State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vash-Basins, 820.; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters orfigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention consists, primarily, in constructing the bowl,waste chamber or passage, and waste-passage connecting the bowl and waste-pipe of a wash-basin in one piece; in forming the wastepipe connecting with such wash-basin or with bath-tubs, water-closets, &c., for a portion of its length with wedgeshaped or tapering ways or sides, to serve as a valve-seat; in a plug-valve havingastraight inner face adapted to fit one inner wall of the waste chamber or pipe and close the wastepassage from the bowl or tub, and with wedgeshaped sides toadapt the same to fit the wedgeshaped ways and permit of the unimpeded passage of the overflow from the basin or tub to the outlet-pipe, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of a wash hasin, waste, and outlet, with the plug-valve in position therein, the full lines showing the plug'valve in position to seal the Waste or passage from the basin, and the dotted lines showingit in raised position to permit of the contents of the basin flowing out therefrom to the waste-pipe. My present improvement is designed to obviate the necessity of employing the customary stopper and chain in stationary wash-stands and bath-tubs, and the ordinary dischargingvalve at the bottom of the water-closet bowls.
In the drawings I have shown my improvement in connection with a stationary wash- (No model.)
basin. The same principles of construction as there shown are such as would be followed in the construction and arrangement of a watercloset bowl, the plug-valve serving, as in the case of a wash-basin, to retain asupply of Water therein, and on the raising of said plugvalve to permit of the automatic discharge of the contents of thebowl. In adapting myimprovem ents to bath-tubs,the tub and waste-passages may be formed integrally,ifdesired, or the tub formed separately therefrom and provided with a discharge-passage connecting with the waste-pipe, a plug-valve constructed according to my invention being attached to a plunger-rod and sealing such discharge-passage in a similar manner to that shown in the drawings when applied to a waslrbasin.

G represents my improved plug-valve, which is constructedof solidindia-rubber,wood, gutt-a-percha, papier-machmr other suitable material,or a combination of two or more of such, and with its side faces of general wedge shape, except that the side H, which, when the plug is in its lowest position, seals the discharge passage or outlet 0 from the bowl, is straight, in order to insure said face pressing closely against the inner face of the waste-pipe and securely sealing the outlet 0. By thus forming this side H of the plug-valve of perpen dicular convex shape, the plug will, as it is raised and lowered, reciprocate in contact with theinner face of the waste-pipe,and as it passes 9 5 a down the perpendicularside H and the tapering sides I of the plug-valve will force any dirt or deposit on the seat down and out of the way. The top ofthe plug is usually convex,as shown, to permit of the overflow from the bowl shed- 10c ding therefrom to the waste-pipe. That portion of the waste-pipe opposite to the bowloutlet 0 is usually enlarged, as shown at J, to afford a free passage for the overflow behind the pl ug-valve when the same is in position to seal the bowl-outlet.
K represents the valve-plunger connected at its lower end to the top of the plug-valve G, for the purpose of reciprocating the same.
By making the plunger-valve solid and of wedge shape, as shown, a tight seat therefor can always be assured, as on its being pushed down within the waste-chamber D and along the ways L it will at all times, even after longeontinued use, securely bind and be wedged in position, so as to seal the bowl-outlet C, while it can also, owing to its wedge shape, be readily drawn up away from the bowl-outlet to permit of the contents of the bowl discharging into the waste pipe D.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. The combination of a wash or other bowl or tub having a suitable dischargeopening and connecting with the waste-pipe, and an oyerfiow-opening connecting the bowl and wastepipe at apointabovethetop of the plug-valve, a wastepipe, a wedge -shaped plugvalve adapted to fit a portion of the sides of the wastepipe and partly close the same, and having a perpendicular face adapted to close the bowl-disel'large opening, and a plunger oonnected to the plug-valve, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a wash-bowl or similar water-reservoir having horizontallyextending discharge and overflow passages conneeting with the waste-pipe, the overflow-passage connecting with the waste-pipe at a point above the top of the pl ug'valve, of a waste-pipe of increased circumference at the part thereof opposite the bowl-discharge opening, and a wedge-shaped plug-valve adapted to partly close the waste-pipe and having a perpendicular inner face and a convex top, and a suitable plunger-rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a wash-bowl or similar water-reservoir having suitable discharge and overflow passages connecting with the waste-pipe, the overflow-passage connecting the bowl and waste-pipe enterin said waste pipe at a point above the top of the plugvalve, of a wastepipehaving an enlarged portion opposite the bowl-discharge and wedgeshaped ways, and a wedge-shaped plug-valve having a perpendicular inner face, and asuitable plunger-rod, and adapted to partly close the waste-pipe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
