UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVESTER B. BREED, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
'BUFFlNG-ROLL.
SSPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,779, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed March 5, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SYLvEsTER B. BREED, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have made certain Improvements in Buffing-Rolls, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relatesto buffer-rolls for finishing the bottoms of boots and shoes, and the nature thereof is fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the roll. It shows the clamp raised to permit the cloth being introduced, and, further, shows, by dotted lines, the position of the clamp when brought down to clamp and hold the cloth. Fig. 2 shows the clamp detached. Fig. 3 illustrates the cam b detached and shows the inner working-face thereof. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the roll.
The roll A is provided with a longitudinal groove, a, and vertical end grooves toreceive the clamp B, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. Said roll is mounted on a central shaft, D, and is covered with felt in the usual and customary way. 7 l
The cam-disks b b are each provided with cam-grooves e, to receive the pintle ends f f of the clamp B, and also with a central bore to receive the shaft D, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Said cams bbear their inner faces close to the ends of roll A, and are clamped to the shaft by suitable screws, as shown.
In order to elevate the clamp B to the position shown in Fig. 1 it is only necessary to turn the roll or central shaft, D, in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, thus causing the ends f f of clamp B to travel upward along the grooves e in cams b. The cloth H may then be adjusted about the roll with its ends overlapping each otherv across the groove a, and thereupon the clamp B (by a reverse movement-of the roll) may be depressed into the groove a, as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 1, and thus secure the ends of the cloth H and tighten the same about the roll.
In operation the finishing-wax is put onto the cloth H, and the roll is revolved by suitable belt or other power, and the shoe being held in hand is pressed to the roll in the usual and customary way.
What I claim, and desire by Letters Patent to secure, is
In a buffing-roll, and in combination substantially as described, the disks b 6, having cam-grooves e, the buffer-roll A, and the clamp B, having pintles f f, and arranged to operate substantially as described. I
SYLVESTER B. BREED.
