Tokyo, Japan Filed Oct. 16, 1963, Ser. No. 316,757 1 Claim. (Cl. 259-8) This invention relates to an apparatus for emulsifying such substances, either alone or with other substances, as bitumen-like asphalt, tar, and pitch, flux, plastics, mineral oil, fats and fatty oils, natural and synthetic resins, rubber, rubber-like substances, fillers, pigment, dyestuffs, and the like.
One object of the present invention is to provide an emulsifying apparatus which is capable of emulsifying the substances to be emulsified completely, and in a short time.
Another object of the present invention to provide an emulsifying apparatus capable of emulsifying, easily and completely, those substances which have been insufficiently emulsified by any conventional emulsifying apparatus fitted with mechanical mixing or high frequency oscillating devices known in the art.
This invention, more particularly, has reference to an emulsifying apparatus capable of stirring and mixing su stances to be emulsified with emulsifying liquid within a magnetic field induced by the flux of magnetic force, particularly such substances as bitumen-like asphalt, tar, pitch, flux, plastics, mineral oil, fats and fatty oils, natural and synthetic resins, rubber, rubber-like substances, fillers, pigment, dyestuffs, and the like.
This invention is directed to an emulsifying apparatus wherein a suitable magnetic flux producing device, capable of projecting its flux into an emulsifying tank, is suitably positioned and installed around said tank, said tank being made of those materials which do not disturb said flux, and a stirring and mixing device suited for agitating substances to be emulsified and the emulsifying liquid across said magnetic flux.
in conventional emulsifying apparatuses, it is known to employ a tank provided with a stirring and mixing device, an emulsifier of colloidmill type wherein substances to be emulsified and emulsifying liquid are mechanically exposed to high-speed agitating emulsification, and still another type of apparatus for mixing and emulsifying substances and emulsion by high frequency oscillation using ultra-short waves and the like.
However, all these features in principle have the single object to increase stirring and mixing efiiciency mechanically.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the embodiments of the present invention, in which;
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus,
FIG. 2 is a front view in longitudinal section of the same.
An emulsifying apparatus of the present invention is explained with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2.
Numeral 1 indicates a cylindrical emulsifying tank, which is made of such materials as synthetic resin, synthetic resin processed substance, black lead treated with synthetic resin, and hard porcelain, pervious to magnetic flux.
3,236,503 Patented Feb. 22, 1966 At the bottom of said vessel there is provided an outlet including an exhaust pipe 3, provided with a cock 4, for removing a desired amount of substance from the tank, and a syphon outlet 2 for keeping a constant amount of substance in the tank, said substance entering through the inlet 5.
Around the outside wall of said tank 1 there is secured a solenoid 6, made of copper wire, copper pipe, and the like, with an insulating layer therebetween, so that said magnetic flux, created by the current applied to said solenoid, may permeate well into said emulsifying tank.
In said tank there is provided a stirring mixer 8, which has a suitable shape and a rotary shaft 7 electrically insulated from outside, which are arranged to be properly rotated by the operation of a pulley 9, a belt 10, and an electromotor 11, all positioned outside said tank.
When said stirring mixer 8 is made, partially or wholly, fro-m conductive material such as metal or metallic oxide electrically insulated it proves to be a better inducer of said flux to the central portion of said emulsifying tank.
Stirring and mixing operation becomes more elfective when said emulsifying tank 1 is provided with several projections in its interior, or substantially as is shown in FIG. 2, and is also provided with a free-control space between said stirring mixer and its inner circuit, through which said mixed contents, after entering in the tank and being stirred and mixed Well, can smoothly flow out, While the currents formed by the mixer are intersected by the magnetic flux 12 which passes through said emulsifying tank.
The apparatus functions as follows:
(1) The stirring mixer 8 is rotated by an electromotor 11.
(2) Magnetic fiux 12 is generated in an emulsifying tank 1 by supplying suit-able current, such as alternating current, to one or more solenoids 6. When the alternating current is used for the creation of said flux, proper selections of both frequency and wavelength for each emulsifica'tion should be considered in accordance with the properties of the substance to be emulsified and its emulsifying liquid. Also when the intermediate or high frequency current is used, cooling should be provided for said solenoid by passing water or its equivalent thereinto through its pipe.
(3)First, a cock 4 of an exhaust pipe 3 which is disposed at the bottom of said emulsifying tank is closed. Then from an inlet conduit 5 for substances, emulsifying liquid of required quantity is continuously introduced into said tank at the same time with substances to be emulsified. Actuated by said mixer 8 to cross said magnetic flux, both are mixed and well emulsified, reaching a certain quantity of mixture then through a syphonic outlet conduit 2 fixed at the bottom of said tank, said mixture is continuously discharged. Immediately after the operation, said cock 4 of the exhaust pipe 3 is opened to discharge emulsified mixtures which remain in said emulsifying tank.
An emulsifying apparatus constructed as is above detailed, is very useful, especially when in continuous operation.
What is claimed is:
An apparatus for emulsifying bitumen and the like, comprising a cylindrical tank of material pervi'ous to a magnetic flux, said tank having a top and bottom, an outlet in said bottom, said outlet including a syphon and an exhaust pipe, valve means in said exhaust pipe for draining said tank, said Syphon maintaining a constant amount of substance in said tank, an inlet conduit in said top, magnetic means disposed peripherally of said cylindnica'l tamks wall exteriorly lllhC'I'flOf for creating a magnetic flux in said tank, a rotatable shaft extending axially through said bottom into said tank, a stirring mixer mounted on said shaft and means for rotating said shaift, said mixer forming currents crossing the path of the magnetic flux.
