Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
JONA. G. WALKER, OF CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO EZEKIEL WILSON.
MARKING BOXES, 66C.
`Specification of Letters Patent No. 3,231, dated August 26, 1843.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, JONATHAN C. VALKEE, of Concord, in the State of New Hampshire. have invented a certain new or Improved Apparatus for Stamping or Marking Letters, Names, or Devices on Bales, Boxes of Merchandise, or other Articles, and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, constitutes a full and exact description of the same.
Figure l of the drawings above mentioned represents a face view of one of the letters used in process of marking. Fig. 2, is a side elevation o-f the same.
This letter or device a, to be imprinted, is cut out a sheet of close or hard felting, and glued or connected to a plate b, of wood or other suitable material, the thickness of the letter being about equal to that of the supporting plate Z). The top and bottom edges c, (l, of the letter and plate b, are beveled or chamfered off, as seen in Figs. 1, and 2. The felting a., being of a spongy consistency will absorb and retain a considerable quantity of any watery o-r oleaginous ink which may be applied to it, so that, when a series of such types or marking characters are properly set up, in a frame and have ink once applied to their printing surfaces, a great many impressions can be taken in succession therefrom, without the necessity of a reapplication of the ink.
My next improvement relates, to the apparatus upon which the type is composed, or by which it is held, during the pro-cess of printing. Fig. 3, denotes a bottom view of the said apparatus. Fig. t a side elevation of the same. It consists of a curved board or tablet c, applied to two side pieces d, cl, which have handles e, e, at, or extending between their ends, as seen in the drawings. Each end of the curved board has a strip of wood f, extending above it, whose edge facing the central part of the board, is beveled or inclined as seen in Fig. 5, the object of the same being to receive the end of a strip' of wood g which is slid or inserted under the same, A strip h., is also applied to one of the sides of curved board and extends, above the same and is inclined on its face, or edge,l like the side strips f, f. The beveled upper edges CZ, Fig. l, of the types P, A, R, I, S, Fig. 3, are placed against or inserted under the inclined edge of the strip k, and are there held in position as seen in the drawings, by the strip g, which is pressed against them, and has its edge in contact with them beveled od so as to hold them down, or to prevent them from falling from the curved board. i
Fig. 5 represents a lengthwise section of the type holder, and Fig. 6, a top view thereof. In them it will be seen that the curved board upon which the types are set up, constitutes the bottom of a box B, which has a cover c, and in which (box) such of the types as may not be in use may be kept.
When the apparatus is used, it is only necessary to grasp the handles in both hands, (the curved bottom or tablet c, being down,) and after dipping the types of the saine into the ink or preparation for printing, apply it to such articles, on which an impression is to be given, by rolling or gradually applying the curved surface of the form of type, from end to end, over the same. x
I-Iaving thus explained my invention I shall claim- Constructing the types of felt, or any other absorbing material of the same effective character, applied to a plate in the manner set forth, also curving the tablet, (upon which they are composed or arranged for the purpose 0f printing,) longitudinally, or in other respects substantially in manner and for the purpose specified, also the combination with the tablet of a box, or Ina-ga- Zine B, arranged upon it in the manner and for the object as described.
In testimony that the above is a correct specification I have hereto set my signature this seventeenth day of July, A. D. 1843.
JONATHAN C. WALKER. `Witnesses: i
CHARLOTTE BARKER, STEPHEN BARKER.
