A. T. WINGHELL.
DEVICE POR TRANSMITTING POWER To WINDMILLS.
Patented July 28, 1885 MM50/a N. Pneus, Pnawumagnphur, wmingwn D. c;
i -UNITED A STATES PATENT Clarion.,
ALvIN T. wINoHELL, or ALBION, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR TRANSNHTTING POWER TO WINDMILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,011, dated July 28,1885.
Application tiled May 18, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALvIN T. WINCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Albion, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in rlransmitting Power for Vindmills; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention relates to an improved means of transmitting the power of windmills to produce rotary motion direct from the same without the employment of pitmen, or bevelgear; and it consists in certain details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawing, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents aside elevation of my invention, showing its application to a windmill, A designates tLe wind-wheel, provided with the usual vane, B, and turn-table C. These parts are all of the usual construction, and form no part of my invention, except as showing one of the many forms of windmills to which the transmitting power is applicable.
Connected to the turn-table C is an upright post, D, provided at its upper end with a swiveled sheave-or pulley, E, its swivel-connection enabling it to always keep inline with the belt or rope a. This belt or rope a passes over the sheave orpulley E, and down through the short sleeve b thereof, and thence extends down under and around a small pulley, F, and up around a larger pulley, G. The belt or rope a, after passing over the pulley G, extends down through the center of the turntable C, and through the standard H thereof, and around a pulley, I, on the counter-shaft c, thence over pulleys K L, forming a continuous and endless belt or rope, c,whioh passes over a system of pulleys above and over the fans and vane of the windmill, thus allowing it to shift to any point of the compass without twisting or coming in contact with the belt or rope.
Upon the shaft of the pulley G is a gearwheel, d, which meshes with the teeth of a similar and larger gear-wheel, e, upon the shaft ofthe wind-wheel A, as shown.
Having now fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with a windmill, of means for transmitting the power thereof, consistingofan endless belt or rope extending over a system of pulleys, as shown, one of which has a swivel-connection upon the end of a post of the-windmill, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
secured to and projecting from the turn-table s 2. In a windmill, the combination, with the turn-table thereof provided with an upright post, of a swiveled sheave or pulley connected 4. In a windmill, the combination, with the` wind-wheel thereof having a shaft carrying a gear-wheel, and a turn-table having connected thereto a vertical post, of a swiveled sheave or pulley upon the upper end thereof, two pulleys having their shafts supported in the post, one of which has a gear-wheel meshing with the teeth of the wheel on the wind-shaft, and an endless belt or rope extending around the several pulleys and around pulleys below the turn-table and below and above the vane of 9c the windmill,substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v
ALVIN T. WINCHELL. In presence of- MoNFoR'r D. Wnnxs, EDWARD L. PARMETER.
