SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent; No. 322,898, dated July 28, 1885.
Application filed December l1, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILSON W. CAREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, iu the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulleys; and I do herebydeclarethat the same are fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
'This invention relates to improvements in pulleys; and it is carried out as follows7 reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

a is the rim of the pulley, as usual, made of wood or metal, as may be desired, and to the inside of said rim are secured, by means of suitable screws or bolts, the metal shoes b b, each one having a radial perforation, b', for the reception ot' the outer end of one of the pulley-arms c, as shown in Figs. I and 2. The outer end of each arm c, is screw-threaded, and passes loosely through lthe perforation b in its shoe b, but is provided on the inside of the latter with a pressure-nut, d, and set-nut d', the latter being provided with the annular cup or shell d in its inner end, so as to conceal and protect the` inner end of the screwthreaded portion of the arm c, by which arrangement a very neat and workmanlike appearance is given to the connecting place between each arm c and its nuts and shoe, as well as a proper protection obtained for the screw-threaded part ofthe arms, by which such screw-threaded portions are prevented from accidental injury and defacement.

The arms c c are made of steel, and by making-them of such a material I obtain great strength of the pulley, combined with lightness, as compared with pulleys of ordinary construction in which cast or wrought iron arms are employed. The steel arms c c, being lighter and more rigid than wrought-iron arms, have also the property of being somewhat elastic, so that the pulley will return to its normal condition after it has been exposed to any undue strain sidewise. The hub ff is centered relative tothe rim a by turning the pressure-nuts d d, Aand. thereby pressing and securing the steel arms c c between their respective shoes b b and-steps or projections ff3 in the bottom of the groovesff in the hub-iiangesff.
If so desired, I may modify the construction of the hub by making the` sleeves f f in one single piece with one ofthe flangesf, and making the other flange loose around the hub and bolt it to the first-named flange, with the steel bars c c between them, by means of screwbolts, as above described.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claiml. The central hub, f f, withrecessed iianges fff3, as described, combined with the radial steel arms c c, the pressure and holding nuts d d', and outer rim, a, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a pulley, the outer rim, a, and screwthreaded steel arms c c, combined with pressnre-nut d and check-nut d', having cup-protector d in its inner end, as and for the purpose set forth.
8. In a pulley, the divided hubs ff, having grooves or radial recesses f f in the anges f f, for the reception of the inner ends of the radial metal arms c c, such arms being clamped between said grooved flanges by means of screw bolts and nuts g g', as and for the purpose set forth.
