EXERCISING DEVICE HAVING A ROTATABLE CROSSBAR Filed March 11, 1963 Praia Z6 Z5 I I I I I I I is l INVENTOR. LESL- IE 1... ETEFF United States Patent 3,228,683 EXERCISING DEVICE HAVING A ROTATABLE CROSSBAR Leslie F. Leteif, Houma, La. (P.0. Drawer A, Slidell, La. 70458) Filed Mar. 11, 1963, Ser. No. 264,222 Claims. (Cl. 27257) This invention relates to manually operated tubular toys and the like.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a toy for children and adults alike which will provide a twisting motion either clockwise or counterclockwise.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a toy which will have a pivotable upper member providing hand grip means for manipulating the toy.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a toy which will provide amusement for the operator wherein he will see how long he can turn or rotate the device without stopping.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a toy which will provide physical fitness means for reducing waistlines and will be made in a variety of dimensions thus being suitable for operation by people of various heights.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a toy bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a vertical side View of a toy comprising the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a side view of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the top portion of FIGURE 2; and
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the bottom portion of FIGURE 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the toy made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include an elongated hollow tube 12 which frictionally receives a tapered hollow rubber foot 14. Foot 14 provides a non-slip grip for tube 12 against the ground 16. Foot 14 may be made of plastic or other suitable material. A hollow sleeve 18 is held at right angles through the upper end of tube 12 by bolt 20 which is received freely within sleeve 18 and within transverse openings 22 through the upper end of tube 12. The non-threaded end of bolt 20 is received freely through transverse opening 24 of cross bar 26, of hollow tubular configuration. A lock washer 28 is received on the threaded end of bolt 20 on the outer periphery of the upper end of tube 12 and a nut 30 is threadingly received against washer 28 thus securing bolt 20 to toy 10. Cross bar 26 is provided with a pair of hand grips 32 made of suitable material and is pivotable on bolt 20.
The persons feet may be placed together, and he then turns his body clockwise or counterclockwise. At one point during this clockwise or counterclockwise rotation, his back will be toward the device.
It shall be noted that the foot 14 on the lower end of tube 12 will thus prevent tube 12 from slipping when the toy 10 is in use.
Patented Jan. 11, 1966 ice It will further be noted that toy 10, due to its particular motion, will thus provide an excellent means for the user to keep physically fit particularly at the waistline.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction it shall be noted that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A toy comprising, in combination, a substantially elongated and tubular vertical tube, a substantially tapered plastic foot carried by said tube providing a means for antislipping of said tube, a substantially tubular cross bar carried by said vertical tube, a substantially hollow sleeve carried by said vertical tube providing a means for supporting said cross bar, a substantially elongated and threaded bolt carried by said vertical tube providing a means for securing said cross bar and said sleeve to said vertical tube, a lock washer and a nut carried by said tube securing said bolt to said tube, the upper end of said elongated vertical tube being pivotably secured to the center of said cross bar and said cross bar arcuately rotating up and down upon said bolt carried by said cross bar and said vertical tube.
2. A combination according to claim 1, wherein the ends of said cross bar are provided with handle grips which are received over the ends of said cross bar and said hand grips provide a means for the operator of said toy to grip said hand bar comfortably and thus pivot the body around while rotating said vertical tube.
3. A combination according to claim 2, wherein said foot on the end of said vertical tube is in frictional engagement with the ground when said operator performs a twisting motion, and said bolt is received through a transverse opening in the upper end of said vertical tube, and said lock washer abuts with the outer periphery of the upper end of said vertical tube, and said lock washer in combination with said nut received on the threaded end of said bolt thus secures said bolt, said sleeve and said cross bars to the upper end of said vertical tube.
4. A combination according to claim 3, wherein said bolt is received freely through transverse opening in the center of said cross bar and said bolt is freely received through the center of said sleeve thus providing pivot means for said sleeve and said cross bar when said toy is in operation.
5. A combination according to claim 4, wherein one end of said sleeve is in abutment with the outer periphery of the upper end of said tube while the other end of said sleeve is arcuate in contour thus conforming to the outer periphery of the center of said cross bar and when said upper end of said vertical tube is rotated said foot on the lower end of said vertical tube rotates in frictional engagement with the ground and said rotation of said vertical tube may be clockwise or counterclockwise and said cross bar oscillates when said operators feet are together when he rotates or twists his body and thus said operator in one point of the cycle of operation is faced with his back towards said vertical tube.
