UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcrr.
FREEBORN F. RAYMOND, 21), OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PROCESS OF APPLYING TOP LIFTS TO HEEL-BL ANKS.
"SPECIFICATION forming paftof Letters Patent No. 322,561, dated July 21, 1885.
Application filed January 17 1885. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREEBORN F. RAYMOND, 2d, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Process of Applying heel-blank, and upon these projecting ends the top lift is secured by whatis known among shoemakers as spanking.
By the process herein described the attaching-nails are driven flush with the upper surface of the heel-blank, and the top lift is then applied with considerable pressure, whereby the heel is compressed sufficiently to leave portions of the nail projecting for holding the top lift. This method of applying the top lift is principally applicable to the National Heeling Machine, so called.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a portion of a National vHeel Attaching Machine with the heel-blank in position and the naildrivers. Fig. 2 shows the heel-blank after the driving of the attaching-nails and before the application of thetop lift. Fig. 3 shows the heel-blank with the top lift applied.
In practicing my process I take a heel-blank and place itin position in the machine upon the sole of the boot or shoe and under the pressure-plate, and arrange the pressure so that the heel-blank is only moderately compressed by the pressure-plate in the act of driving the awls and the attaching nails. (See Fig. 1). The attaching-nails a, however, are
driven so that their points a clinch upon the iron heelsupport b, and their heads 0 are flush with the upper surface of the heel-blank. The top liftd is then applied to the heel-blank, but I with considerable more pressure than is usually employed in fastening the same in place, and this pressure, being communicated to the heelblank, compresses it still further, and the heel-attaching nails being left standing upon the iron support or button are not changed as to their length, so that upon the further com pression of thehecl-blank, upon the application of the top lift they enter the top lilt and hold it firmly in place, (see Fig. 3,) the leather or substance of the heel-blank by this further compression being bound or compressed tightly about and against the heel-attaching nails, and is held down in place thereby. Glue or cement may also be used for assisting in attaching the heel-blank,if desired, but by the application of sufficient pressure sufficient portions of the attaching-nails are embedded in the substance of the top lift to hold it firmly in place.
The advantages of the invention are obvious.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The process of attaching top lifts to heel--' blanks, consisting, first, in moderately compressing the'heel-blank and driving the attaching-nails while thus moderately compressed to an iron-surfaced support, and, second, in then applying the top lift upon the heel-blank, still further compressing the same and cansing the ends of the attaching-nails to be unj covered and embedded in the top lift, all sub stantially as and for the purposes described.
FBEEBORN F. RAYMOND,2D.
