PATENT OFFICE.-
FBEEBORN F. RAYMOND, 21 OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ocEss OF ATTACHING HEELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,006, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed une 20, 1885 To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREEBORN F. RAYMOND, 2d, of Newton, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have made a new and useful Improvement in the Process of Attaching Heels to Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relatesespeciall y to the manner or mode ofattaching heel-blanksand top lifts to boots or shoes; and it comprises the following steps: first, the attachment of the heelblank' to the soles of boots or shoes by a gang or group of nails simultaneously driven; second, as applying the top lift to the heel-blank, and, third, in simultaneously driving through the top lift a secondary or supplementary gang or group of nails, either headed or not, as may be desired. 7
Of course in practicing this process it is not essential that the heads or butts of the attaching-nails be leftprojecting to receive the top lift, or,if such heads or butts be used, that they be the heads 'or butts of atta'chingnails, as I can use shorter nails for that purpose, if desired, in which case the attaching-nails may be driven flush with the surface of the heelblank, and the other nails will be shorter and driven to leave their butts or heads projecting Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a veriical section of an attached heel-blank, showing the butts of the attaching-nails projecting from the upper surface of the blank. Fig. 2 shows the same heel-blank with the top lift in position. Fig. 3' represents in section on the line 00 :vof Fig. 4 the supplemental or auxiliary gang of nails driven through the top lift. Fig. 4' is a plan view of the complete heel shown in Fig. 8. Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8 show various modified forms of my invention, which are hereinafter specially referred to.
In practicing the process the heel-blank A is placed upon the outsole of the boot or shoe and the gang or group-of nails 0 simultaneously driven. I prefer in practicing this part of the process to use the National Heeling- Machine, so called, described in patent numbered 316,894, to H. A. Henderson, but 'of Serial No. 169,253. (ITo model.)
course any heel-attaching machine can be used. The next step in the process is to spank on or locate the top lift, 13. If the butts of the attaching or other nails 1) are leftprojecting from the heel-blank, then the top lift is spanked onto them; but it is not necessary that it should be spanked on before the driving of the gang or group ofauxi'liary or supplemental nails 0, as it can be placed by hand, or itcan be fastened by glue or cement to the heelblank preparatory to the driving of the additional nails, or it may be located automatically by the devices described in my pending application, filed January 31, 1885, Serial No. 154,500. (See Figs. 7 and S.) The gang or group of additional or supplemental fastenings are then simultaneously driven through the top lift.
Of course the top lift of the heel-blank may be provided with perforations before these auxiliary nails are driven, if desired; and in my application of even dateherewith I have described a device for so perforating the top lift and heel-blank before the auxiliary nails are driven. e
The auxiliary nails may be headed nails or not, as desired, and may be driven as preferred; and I have described in my pending application, and in my application of even date herewith, the means of simultaneously driving this supplemental or auxiliary gang or group of fastenings. It will be seen that this auxiliary group of fastenings serves the follow ing purposes: first, it assists in securing the top lift to the heel-blank; second, it provides an ornamental finish to the heel, and, third, it provides an increased wearing-surface of metal.
It will be observed that the essential elements of this invention will be followed if, instead of driving the attachingnails through what I term the heel-blank, they are driyen through a heel-blank having the top lift first attached or secured thereto substantially as is done in what is called flush nailing. The simultaneous driving of the additional or supplemental fastenings will take place preferably immediately after the driving ofthe attachingnail. This form of the process is shown in Figs. 7 and S.
It will be found advisable after the driving of the supplemental or auxiliary group of nails ICO to finish the heel by submitting it to a spanking operation-that is, by bringing a properlyshaped metal surface with considerable force upon the top lift after the supplemental nails have been driven-and devices for this spank :ing or finishing the heel are shown and described in my said pending and in my application of even date herewith.
Having thus fully described my invention, :0 I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. That process of attaching heels to boots or shoes which consists in securing the heelbiauk to the soles of the boot or shoe by a gang 15 or group of fiistenings simultaneously driven; second, in applying the top lift to the heel; third, in simultaneously driving into the top lift and heel-blank a gang or group of auxiliary or supplemental nails, all substantially as and for the purposes described. 20
2. That improvement in the process of attaching heels to boots or shoes consisting, first, in attaching the heel-blank and top lift to the boot or shoe by a gang or group of fastenings simultaneously driven, and, second, in simul- 25 taneously driving into the top lift and heel blank a supplemental or auxiliary gang of nails or slugs for ornamental or wearing use, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
