No. 267,191 3 Claims. ((Il. 214) This invention relates to an eye protecting device such as may be used for welders either in the form of a goggle or a face shield or for other uses.

Heretofore in the use of eye protecting devices of tits character, there has been provided a filter lens so as to reduce the intensity of the bright light produced by the welding are at the time it reaches the eye, and then in order to protect this filter lens which is relatively expensive from flying sparks or the like, there has been provided a cover plate to shield this filter lens, and between the two there has been provided a Washer to separate the parts so that the cover will not touch and scratch the surface of the filter lens.

One of the objects of this invention is to reduce the number of parts which have heretofore been used in a construction of this sort so that the assembly may be more simple.

Another object of the invention is to eliminate the washer which is the most destructible of the parts which are usually used for assembly.

Another object of the invention is to provide a cover which at the same time will be spaced from the filter lens so that it will not scratch the same.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device which has the added feature of providing ventilation or air passage between the filter lens and the cover plate so that fogging may be reduced to a minimum.

Another object of the invention is to provide a cover which may provide a spacing from the filter lens and be molded all in one piece.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In proceeding with this invention, I have provided a cover plate which is molded from some clear plastic in such a way that there will be spaced projections extending on one side of the plate, all of the same thicknesswise dimension, and which will engage the marginal edge around the filter lens so as to space the cover plate therefrom. These projections are spaced apart so that air spaces are provided at intervals permitting the movement of air across the plate to prevent fogging.

With reference to the drawings, designates the body portion of a goggle having an edge 11 curved to fit about the face so that it may be held snugly in position about the face and over they eyes of the wearer by an extendable or elastic strap 12.

This body of the goggle is also equipped with a frame 14 which has a lip 15 extending inwardly from its outer periphery so that there will be a substantially right angle between this lip and the wall 16 of the frame. A rib or spaced lugs 17 may be located on the wall 16 at such a location that when the cover plate 18 and filter lens 19 3,225,357 Fatented Dec. 28, 1965 are placed in contact one with the other and forced into the frame, they will hold the cover plate and lens snugly in the frame against the lip 15 of the frame.

The filter lens is a plain rectangular piece of glass with the coloring therein sufficient to reduce the intensity of the light of the arc formed by welding. In this case, however, the cover plate designated generally 18 is of a similar rectangular shape but is provided with projections at its opposite ends such as 20 and 21 extending substantially the length of the edge, while intermediate the length of the cover plate there are

20 and 21 so as to provide spaces 24 at the top and 25 at the bottom which, when assembled with the filter plate, will provide air passages from top to bottom between the cover and the lens.

In order to cooperate with this spacing and provide for air passage, slots 26 at the top and 27 at the bottom in the wall 16 of the frame are provided so located as to register with the

openings

24 and 25 to permit the passage of air between the cover and the lens to reduce the accumulation of moisture sometimes referred to as fogging which may occur because of difference of t mperature on the inside and outside of the goggle.

I claim:

1. A generally rectangular face shield of a width to cover both eyes of a wearer comprising a frame for retaining eye protecting means, a filter lens and a transparent cover plate therefor, both in a flat plane in said frame, said cover plate having integral projections of the same piece of material along its marginal edge extending toward the filter lens to space it from said filter lens, said projections having flat surfaces and being of substantial width presenting broad surfaces to the filter lens.

2. A generally rectangular face shield of a width to cover both eyes of a wearer comprising a frame for retaining eye protecting means, a filter lens and a transparent cover plate therefor, both in a flat plane in said frame, said cover plate having molded as one piece therewith spaced projections along its marginal edge extending toward the filter len to contact and space it from said filter lens, said projections having flat surfaces and being of substantial width presenting broad surfaces to the filter lens.

3. A generally rectangular face shield of a width to cover both eyes of a wearer comprising a frame for retaining eye protecting means, a filter len and a cover plate therefor, both in a flat plane in said frame, said cover plate having integral projections of the same piece of material along its marginal edge extending toward the filter lens to space it from said filter lens and provide intermittent spaces between the cover and lens at its upper and lower edges, said projections having flat surfaces and being of substantial width presenting broad surfaces to the filter lens, said frame being provided with openings registering with the spaces between said projections for the passage of air between said lens and plate.

Claims

1. A GENERALLY RECTANGULAR FACE SHIELD OF A WIDTH TO COVER BOTH EYES OF A WEARER COMPRISING A FRAME FOR RETAINING EYE PROTECTING MEANS, A FILTER LENS AND A TRANSPARENT COVER PLATE THEREFOR, BOTH IN A FLAT PLANE IN SAID FRAME, SAID COVER PLATE HAVING INTEGRAL PROJECTIONS OF THE SAME PIECE OF MATERIAL ALONG ITS MARGINAL EDGE EXTENDING TOWARD THE FILTER LENS TO SPACE IT FROM SAID FILTER LENS, SAID PROJECTIONS HAVING FLAT SURFACES AND BEING OF SUBSTANTIALL WIDTH PRESSENTING BOARD SURFACES TO THE FILTER LENS
