(Cl. 214) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A goggle having a soft resilient body to comfortably fit the face of the wearer and a relatively rigid frame inserted into a sight opening in the body with means to prevent spreading of the soft body to come out of grooves in the rigid frame in which it fits, said rigid frame also having a hinged cover.

One of the object of the invention is to provide a frame for the lens which will carry as a one-piece structure therewith all of the parts necessary for mounting it in assembled relation with the body of the goggle.

Another object of the invention is to provide an arrangement of assembled frame and body of the goggle so that the body will not pull away from the frame when tension is exerted on the straps to hold the goggle on the head of the wearer.

Another object of the invention is to provide a good tight fitting joint between the body of the goggle and the frame to prevent the entry of air or foreign matter between the two.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In proceeding with this invention, I have provided a frame for receiving a lens or a plurality of lenses in the frame which has a portion molded therewith to provide a groove into which the edge of the body surrounding the sight opening may be positioned and be snugly held and prevented from separation. In some cases this frame may carry a cover which is hinged thereto. Also there is provided a means for retaining a magnifying or auxiliary lens against the inner surface of the frame as occasion may require.

With reference to the drawings, 10 designates generally the body of a goggle which is of a relatively soft material and is provided with an outwardly extending flange 11 surrounding its open edge for engagement with the face. In the lower portion of this goggle, its peripheral edge is arched upwardly as at 12 (see FIG. 5) to accommodate the nose of the wearer. Means 14, in FIG. 1, receives a strap 15 which may be adjusted and which may hold the goggles snugly against the face of the wearer. A sight opening 16 as seen in FIG. 6 is provided in the front wall 17 of the body, which front wall is slightly thickened about the margin of the opening 16 as may be seen by the rectangular formation 18 in FIG. 5 which provides a surface substantially in a single plane for engagement with a frame designated generally 20 and seen by itself in FIG. 2. This frame is of generally a box-like structure having a portion of a front wall 21 and edge walls 22 with a rear wall 23, the front and rear walls being provided with

24, 24 to generally register with the sight opening 16 in the front wall of the body. A flange 25 (FIG. 3) projects rearwardly from the rear wall 23 and is provided with a V-shaped groove 26 having a wall 27 and a wall 28 at angles to each other and of a size to snugly fit and receive the marginal edge 18 of the body on the goggle. The V shape of the groove affords a snug fit between the two and the plane surface formed by the thickened portion 18 serves to provide a good seal against this rear wall 23 of the frame. Pins 29 are molded with the frame to extend from one of the walls, preferably the wall 23 of the frame, and openings 30 located at the proper position in the marginal edge 18 receive the pins 29 so as to lock the marginal edge 18 into the V-shaped groove. The frame 20 is of generally stiff or rigid material whereas the body is soft and pliable and these pins prevent the body from being pulled out of the groove or separated from the frame especially at its mid portions.

It is a simple matter to assembly the frame with the body, it being merely a matter of tucking the edge which is soft and quite flexible into the groove all the way around the sight opening and assuring that the pins 29 extend through the corresponding openings in the marginal edge arm 38 extends inwardly from the riveted portion and I carries a button 39 to overhang the marginal edge of the rearwardly extending portion 25 of the frame so that an auxiliary lens 40, such as a magnifying lens, may be positioned against wall 28 across the sight opening by flexing the button 39 or body to which it is attached to position the lens against the inner surface of the portion 25 of the frame and hold it in position.

In some cases a cover designated generally 43 (FIG. 8) is provided which may contain removable lenses in pocket 44 and this is hinged by any suitable means such as 45 to the upper edge of the frame 20 so that this cover may be hinged upwardly and held in such upward position by some resilient means to be snapped down over the sight in FIG. 8.

I claim:

1. A goggle comprising a body provided with a front wall having a generally rectangular sight opening for both eyes with a marginal edge, a frame of generally the shape of said opening having a registering sight opening therethrough with a surrounding edge in which there is an outwardly opening V-shaped groove receiving the edge of the front wall about said opening, pins integral with and extending from one of the walls of the groove toward the other wall and openings in said marginal edge receiving said pins to lock the edge to said frame.

2. A' goggle as in claim 1 wherein said pins and openings are on opposite sides of the frame to prevent the front wall of the body from spreading apart to become disengaged from the groove of said frame.

3. A goggle as in claim 1 wherein said frame has means to removably receive a lens therein.

4. A goggle as in claim 1 wherein said frame has means to removably receive a lens therein, a cover of a size to extend across said sight opening and means to hinge said cover to swing over said sight opening in the frame.
