BOX AND PAD FOR CANCELlNG-STAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,534, dated July 21, 1885.
Application filed February 21, 1884.
Illinois, and a citizen of the United States,
haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Box and Pad for Canceling-Stamps, of which the following is a full description,
- reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view with the cover removed; Fig. 2, a plan View of the cover; Fig. 3, a plan view of the box with the pad removed; Fig. 4., an under view of the felt section of the pad; Fig. 5. a cross-section of the box; Fig. 6, a cross-section of the complete pad; and Fig. 7, a cross-section of the complete device, showing portions of a table to which it is applied.
The object of this invention is to provide an inking-pad for post-marking, canceling, and other stamps which will hold a considerable quantity of ink, and to place such pads in a box so constructed that in a rapid handling of the stamp it will not be injured by striking on or against the containing box; and its nature consists in the several combinations of parts hereinafter claimed as new.
In the drawings, A indicates the cover; 13, the box; C, the pad; a, the projecting corners of the box; I), the depressed sides or sides and ends of the box; 0, a finger-hole in the bottom of the box for pushing out the pad; d, the felt portion of the pad; 6, an interposed piece of enameled cloth, leather, or other suitable material; f, the body of the pad, andgthe raised portion or border surrounding the felt to cause it to retain a quantity of ink.
The box B is usually cast, and its corners or are made to project upward and outward, as shown, so that the box may be inserted in a suitable hole in the table without ch amfering or beveling the table tolet the box down. The upper edges of the sides, or sides and ends, are depressed or lowered, as shown, so as to be below the surface of the table when in position, as shown in Fig. 7. This arrangement'pre vents the operator from hitting the cancelingstamp against the box, which arrangement prevents the stamp from being injured by use with this pad. 7
For the purpose of readily removing the pad I provide the bottom of the box with ahole, a, into which the finger or some instrument may (ModeL) be inserted for the purpose of pushing the pad out.
The cover A is made in any suitable form to keep the dust out of the pad and to prevent the ink from drying up when it is not in use.
The lower or under section of the pad is made of a composition of glue and glycerine or molasses, and commonly known as rollercomposition. The'upper portion or section of the padis made of thick felt of the kind or quality known as wool-felt. To the under side of this felt I attach a thin piece of enameled cloth, 6, by mucilage or other adhesive material, sufficient to prevent it from curling when the composition is applied. This piece is smaller than the felt, its size in relation thereto being about in the proportion shown in Fig. 4, which leaves a'margin around it for the adhesion of the composition to the felt. This piece e may be of leather or other suitable material, which will resist or partially resist absorption of the composition. This piece e serves two important purposes, as it prevents the felt from absorbing the composition,s0 as to displace a part of the ink and preventing any absorption of the composition, which cools less rapidly in the middle. It thereby prevents the pad from warping or the surface thereof from becoming hollow. This piece 0 keeps the surface of the pad smooth and level, and permits the casting or molding of the composition directly to the pad when it is hot, without in any manner disturbing the evenness of the padsurface.
It will be seenfronl Figs. 1 and 4 that the felt has a smaller area than the composition, so that when the felt, with its protector e, is placed in a proper mold for casting the pad a beveled border, 9, will be cast around and adhere to the felt at the edges. By this arrangement the pad can bemade to hold a considerable quantity of 'ink in the felt without the liability of its flowing off or of being driven off in use; and by making the raised border g around the felt the pad will retain the ink in a box having low sides.
This pad is designed to be used in connection with a post office marking and canceling stamp; but I do not limit myself to its use with this class of stamps.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An inking-pad consisting of a roller-coniposition, an ink'absorbent surface, and a non absorbent layer next to the composition between it and the ink-absorbent surface, sub- 5 stantially as described.
2. An inking-pad consisting of a roller-composition, an ink-absorbent surface, and a nonabsorbent layer interposed between the composition and absorbent surface and of asmaller 10 area than said parts to permit them to adhere together, substantially as described.
3. In a box and pad for canceling-stamps, the combination of the box having horizontal corner projections, depressed orlowered sides, and a bottomfplate with the roller-compost I 5 tion filling, the non-absorbent layer, and the ink -absorbent surface, substantially as described.
