` E. 0. NELSON.
- PIRE BXTINGUISHER HOLDER. No. $22,468. Patenfted July .21, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENTv FFICE.
ERASTUS C. NELSON, OF EVANSTON, ILLINGIS,
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER HOLDER.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322.468,6lated July 21, 1885. Application fixed May 1o, ists. (No monti.) 4
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ERAsTUs C. NELsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishing- Fluid Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the removal of the top of the holders or retainers for lire-extinguishing fluids; and the invention consistsin the details of construction hereinafter described.
. ofthe holder.
In the drawings, A represents the holder; B, the top; G, a piece attached to the under side of the holder; D, a point or edge of such piece turned up against the top; E, the staple to which the ring for suspending the hold er is attached; and F, such ring.
In making a holder or retainer for tire-eX- tinguishing fluids containing my improvement, I take a holder of the ordinary kind, consisting of a tube about twenty inches in length and twoinches in diameter.- This tube is closed by a top of soft or thin tin or other suitable metal, which is usually soldered onto the upper end of the holder in such away that the same can be easily removed by tearing or cutting the tin. Io facilitate this cutting or tearing I attach to the under side of the top an additional piece of hard metal, preferably sheet-steel, so that it will form a sharp and hard cutting point or edge. This pieceis bent out from the top proper a short distance, and the vpoint or edge is turned up against the same, as shown in the drawings. As represented in the drawings, this portion of the supplemental piece attached to the top is shaped to a sharp point sloping away at the y sides, so that it will readily and easily penetrate the tin composing the top and cut through y the same, by which the tearing is begun and' facilitated. It need not, however, be brought to a point if' it be made so as to present a sharp edge to the tin, that can be jerked or pulled through the same. To thus pull the point or edge of the supplemental piece of the top up and through the top, so as to cut the same,
I pass a staple down through the top and through the supplemental piece, where it is fastened by turning the end of the staple to one side. A ring is passed through the upper end of the staple, by which the holdervcan, when not required for use, be suspended to a nail or hook in the wall. When the holder is needed for use, this ring presentsahole for the hand, so that the staple can bejerked or pulled up, causing it to pull or jerk the point or edge of the supplemental piece of the top through the same and effect the commencement of the tearing or cutting above mentioned. rlhe top, being cut or torn through at this place, can easily be jerked off by a continued pull on the ring. In this Way there will be no difticultyin effecting a quick and complete removal ofthe top when it is desired to apply the liuid contained in the holder to extinguish a fire.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Aiire-eXtinguisher-lluid holder provided with a top or cover proper, and asupplemental piece on its under side having apoint or edge turned up against the top proper to admit of being pulled or jerked through thesame, substantially as described.
2. A re-eXtinguisher-iluid holder provided with a top proper, asupplemental piece on its under side having a point or edge turned up against the top proper to admit ol' being pulled or jerked through the same, anda staple passed down through the top proper and the supplemental piece, and fastened under or to such supplemental piece, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
ERAS'IUS C.'NELSON.
