Description

` H. HANDY.
(No Model.) A
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HANDY, OF FITZWILLIAM, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
EGG-PACKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 322,444, dated July 21l 1885.
Application led December 23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HANEY, of Fitzwilliam, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Egg- Packer and Method of Packing Eggs, of which the following is aspecioation.
The special obj ect of this invention is to pack- Jthe eggs in Vsuch a way that they will not be liable to breakage during transportation by jars or surface-contact with hard substances.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then clearly pointed out in the claims.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view in elevation, showing the casca-nd tubes,
the cover being thrown back. Fig. 2 is a section of the box and assemblage of tubes pasted or otherwise fastened together at the sides and open at both ends. Fig. 3 is aview in elevation of the reversible holder, with the eggs in place as they stand when the tubes have been removed, as is done before taking out the eggs.
In the drawings, A represents the packing box or case, preferably provided with a hinged cover, A. On the sides of'this cover are arranged the pendent flanges a a, which turn at their rear lower corners on'the pivots a a, so that the front and rear of cover fit snugly down upon the corresponding edges of case while the flanges break joint with the sides. I may use an elastic packing-strip between the cover and case, so as to render the box practically air-tight where the eggs are to be preserved a considerable time. The side ilanges thus perform three functions-namely, prevent the inlet of dust at the sides, connect the cover with the case-pivots, and effectually guard the cover against lateral displacement.
a a2 represent the spring latch and catch which I prefer to use.
B represents an assemblage of tubes (pasted, cemented, or otherwise) open at both ends, joined together side by side, and made of a diameter transversely a little larger than that of the eggs which are to be packed.
` b is a handle or iexible strip attached at the ends to the top of tubes, and as near as possitheir corresponding ends are all flush with each other or in the same transverse plane.
The method of using my packer is as follows: I first place Within the case an assemblage of tubes sulicient to fill without crowding it. I next drop into each tube, standing vertically, one of the double reversible cups and one egg. Then on each egg I place another cup or holder, and into the latter another egg. This is continued until the tubes are nearly filled, when I top off each uppermost egg with a double spring cup and fasten down the cover. It will thus be seen that the box may be turned up, down,` or on the sides without changingthe local relation of the eggs to their cups, tubes, or case, while the elastic cups take allthe shock or jar without danger of fracture to the eggs.
What I desire to protect by Letters Patent 1s- 1; The combination, in an egg'packer, of a case, A A', a corresponding assemblage of open-ended tubes, B, and elastic egg-holders C,
substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in an egg-packer, of openended tubes and elastic double coned reversible holders C, whereby the eggs may be packed in the tubes on the holders and the latter may be removed in advance of the eggs, substantially as described.
HENRY HANDY.
