H. PRETSCHOLD HINGE FOR STOVES, &0.
Patented July 14, 1885.
RS, Plw to-Lilhngnpher, Wnhingibn. IL C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGO PRETSOHOLD, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO'JAMES ,Gr. WELDON AND JOHN KELLY, OF SAME PLACE.
HINGE FOR STOVES, &c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,394, dated July 14, 1885.
7 Application filed January 19, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO PRETSCHOLD, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges for Stoves, Ranges, 8E0. and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows an oven with hinge attached; Fig. 2, a top view of hinge 5 Fig. 3, a side view in section of hinge.
This invention has relation to hinges, and has for its object to provide a hinge which shall be particularly adapted for use on doors which open downwardly instead of opening from the side, and it is especially designed for use on the doors of stove or range ovens, where the door is of considerable weight, and where it is desirable that the door shall not be dropped entirely down, but shall remain at a right angle to the face of the stove or oven, in order to serve as a shelf when the door is open.
This invention further includes not alone a hinge and a support for the door when open, but also means for closing the door and holding it in that position. It also serves to support the weight of the door while being opened and closed, thus preventing any sudden dropping of the door, which is of common occurrence--first, on account of the weight of the door, and, secondly, on account of the inconvenience of handling the doors while they are hot.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the butt of the hinge, having the knuckle a on a lug at the upper outside corner for the reception of the pintle of the leafB. On
each side of the center of the butt Ais an ear The arm E has at its- (No model.)
limited in its movement by the lug f coming in contact with the projection g on the face of the buttA between the earsc c. The bearing of the arm E is sufficiently large to admit a strong coiled spring to be placed around the pin 01, one end of said spring being attached to the pin (1, and the other end to the inside of the hearing or eye.
The operation of the hinge is as follows: The coiled spring is placed inside of the collar or eye of the arm E, and the outer end of the spring is firmly attached to the inside of it. The pin (1 is then placed in position to retain the arm E in place between the ears 0 c, and the inner end of the spring is fastened to said pin. The leaf B is attached to the butt A by means of the pintle h, fitting in the knuckle a. The support E is directly behind the leaf B, and the friction-roller 6 passes through the slot b, and presses against and rides on the face of the door.
The butt A is fastened to the range or stove in any desirable manner, and the leaf is at; tached to the door in the same way. The door is then hung, the friction-rollers passing through the slot and pressing against the door, and by reason of the pressure of the spring serving tokeep the door closed with out the use of a latch or catch. When the door is opened, the friction'roller runs on its face, pressing back the arm and further coilingthe spring, thus offering sufiicient strength to the arm to prevent dropping the door.
.VVhen the door is open to a right angle to the face of the oven, the lug fon the collar of the supporting-arm strikes the projection g,
and prevents any further movement in a downward direction of the door. In this position the arm E serves not alone as a stop to prevent any further movement of the door, but also affords a support sufficiently strong and rigid to allow the door to be used as a shelf, on which can be placed any articles withdrawn from or about to be placed in the oven.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a stove and a downwardly-opening door thereon, of a hinge connecting the door-to the stove, a pivoted supporting-arm attached to said hinge, and a 100 the downward movement of the door is limited, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. I 5 v HUGO PRETSOHOLD.
