Description

Dec. 14, 1965 F. J. MILLER 3,222,732
DUPLEX PUSH PLATE ASSEMBLY FOR SWINGING DOORS Filed Oct. 31, 1963 I I 2 /2 4, s INVENTOR 5 I mm .1. M/LLER ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,222,732 DUPLEX PUSH PLATE ASSEMBLY FOR SWINGING DOORS Fred J. Miller, 520 Bryant St., San Francisco, Calif. Filed Oct. 31, 1963, Ser. No. 320,422 2 Claims. (Cl. 2016) This invention relates to a push plate combination for swinging doors.
Swinging glass doors of the kind commonly used in office buildings and elsewhere are provided at opposite sides thereof with push plates used in manually swinging such doors in either direction to open positions. The means now employed in mounting push plates on swmging doors includes set screws or other similar devices which in time, through the repeated swinging movement of the doors and the vibration imparted to the push plates, become loose or detached, thereby frequently requiring mechanical servicing to maintain such push plates in securely attached positions on the doors.
The present invention provides a novel duplex push plate combination for a swinging door which is not apt to become loose or detached even though subjected to vibration caused by repeated hand pressures applied thereto and the swinging movement of the door.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel push plate combination which is efficient and economical in that it is easily installed on a swinging door and does not require servicing to maintain it in operation.
Other and further objects of this invention will be indicated in the appended claims or will be obvious to one skilled in the art upon an understanding of the present disclosure. For the purpose of this application, I have elected to show herein certain forms and details of a combination push plate arrangement for swinging doors which is representative of my invention; it is to be understood, however, that the embodiment of my invention herein shown and described is for purposes of illustration only and that therefore it is not to be regarded as exhaustive of the variations of the invention in the art.
In the accompanying drawing:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a push plate combination mounted on a glass door;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the plates, showing the door in section;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale, taken horizontally through the push plates;
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of FIG. 3; and
FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of FIG. 3.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a door of glass or other material, which is mounted for swinging movement in the usual manner.- Swinging doors of this type are usually provided with push plates on their opposite sides to facilitate the opening thereof in either direction. The present invention relates specifically to a novel duplex push plate combination adapted for use with swinging doors.
Mounted at opposite sides of the door '1 in corresponding opposed positions are a first push plate 2 and a second push plate 3 of suitable shape which are supported preferably by a pair of identical assemblies having parts extending through suitably spaced circular holes 4 provided in the door. Since identical assemblies are provided for mounting the push plates on the door, a description of one will suiiice for both. Secured to the push plate 2 and arranged perpendicularly thereto is a rod 5 or the like which extends through a spacing ring 6 positioned inside a hole 4 in the door. The rod 5 is formed with an axial threaded outward extension 5a which screws into a threaded opening provided in the push plate 2, such extension preferably being of smaller diameter than the rod to provide an annular shoulder adapted to abut the inner side of the push plate 2. Supported on the rod 5 is a spacing sleeve 7, the ends of which are adapted to abut the push plate 2 and the door 1. The rod 5 has a threaded end portion 50 which extends into and operatively engages with the internal threads of a rotatable adjustment sleeve 8. Secured to push plate 3 and arranged perpendicularly thereto is a stud 9 having a head 9a thereon which is formed with a socket 912 adapted to receive a tool used to screw an axial threaded outward extension on such stud into a threaded opening in the push plate 3. The threaded extension 90 is preferably of smaller diameter than the sleeve 9 to provide an an nular shoulder adapted to abut the inner side of the push plate 3. The stud 9 is co-axially aligned with the rod 5, and the head 9a thereof is held inside the adjustable sleeve 8 by an inwardly protruding annular flange 8a on the outer end of such sleeve having an axial opening of smaller diameter than the diameter of the said head through which the stud 9 loosely extends. The adjustable sleeve 8 is urged inwardly by a coil compression spring 10 which is confined under tension between the push plate 3 and the flange 8a of such sleeve. Mounted on and keyed to the rotatable adjustable sleeve 8 is an adjusting sleeve 11 which has substantially the same length and external diameter as the sleeve 7. The sleeves 8 and 11 are secured to each other as by means of a longitudinal key member 12 lodged in opposed longitudinal slots in the two (2) sleeves. The ends of the adjusting sleeve 11 are adapted to abut the door 1 and the push plate 3.
It will be noted that when the adjusting sleeve 11 is turned by hand in a certain direction, the adjustable sleeve 8 is also rotated and adjusted inwardly on the rod 5 toward the spacing ring 6. Since the head 9a of the stud 9 is engaged outwardly by the annular flange 8a of the sleeve 8, the stud and the push plate 3 are adjusted inwardly toward the door along with the sleeve 8. The continued inward adjustment of the adjustable sleeve 8 on the rod 5 will draw the push plate 3 inwardly against the outer end of the adjusting sleeve 11 following which the inner end of such adjusting sleeve will be brought into firm abutting relationship with the door, and the push plate 2 through the rod 5, will be drawn tightly against the outer end of the sleeve 7 to secure the parts of the assembly against displacement with respect to one another. It is to be noted also that the threads on the extension 5a of the rod 5 are adapted to screw into the threaded opening in the plate 2 when the adjustable sleeve 8 is rotated on the rod to adjust the parts of the assembly to positions wherein they are secured against displacement.
What I claim is:
1. In a duplex push plate assembly for swinging doors, a first push plate and a second push plate mounted on opposite sides of such a door, a rod secured at one end thereof to the first push plate and arranged at substantially right angles to such push plate and having a threaded end portion extending through an opening in the door, an adjustable sleeve having an internally threaded portion adjustably mounted on and connected to the threaded end portion of the rod, a compression spring interposed between the second push plate and the adjustable sleeve to urge the said adjustable sleeve toward the door, a structurally rigid member connecting the adjustable sleeve and the second push plate, the adjustable sleeve being rotatably adjustable on the rod to adjust the second push plate toward the door, a spacing sleeve mounted on the rod and arranged with its ends abutting the door and the first push plate, and a rotatable adjusting sleeve mounted on and keyed to the adjustable sleeve to adjust the adjustable sleeve on the rod toward the door, whereby the second push plate is drawn into abutting relation with one end of the rotatable adjusting sleeve and the other end of the rotatable adjusting sleeve is brought into abutting relation with the door, and the first push plate is drawn into firm engagement with the spacing sleeve.
2. In aduplex push plate assembly for swinging doors, a first push plate and a second push plate mounted on' opposite sides of such a door; and arranged'in substantially parallel relation to each other, a rod's'ecured at one'end thereof to the first push plate and arranged at substantially right angles to such push plate and having a threadedend portion extending through'an opening in the door, an adjustable sleeve having an internally threaded portion adjustably mounted on and connected to the threaded end portion of the rod, the adjustable sleeve having inwardly disposed flange means on an end'thereof, a stud secured at one end thereof to the second push plate and having a head at its opposite end connected to the flange means of the adjustable sleeve to adjust the second push plate toward the door when the adjustable sleeve is adjusted on the rod toward the door, a spacing sleeve mounted on the rod and arranged with its ends abutting the door and the first push plate, and rotatably adjusting sleeve mounted on and keyed to the adjustable sleeve to adjust the adjustable sleeve on the rod toward the door, whereby the second push plate is drawn into abutting relation with one end of the rotatable adjusting sleeve, and the other end of the rotatable adjusting sleeve is brought into abutting relation with the door, and the first push plate is drawn into firm engagement with the spacing sleeve.
