Description
Dec. 7, 1965 w. E. LARSON 3,221,956
OWL SEWING KIT Filed NOV. 13, 1962 INVENTOR lV/LBER E.L.ARSON United States Patent 3,221,956 OWL SEWING KIT Wilbur E. Larson, 4802 William Ave, Olympia, Wash. Filed Nov. 13, 1962, Ser. No. 237,231 1 Claim. (Cl. 223-406) This invention relates to sewing accessory holders and more particularly to an owl shaped sewing kit.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel device which will be both decorative in appearance as well as serving a useful purpose for holding scissors, needles, pins, thread and thimbles.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an owl sewing kit which will be made of Wood or plastic and will keep sewing accessories retained externally as well as internally thus providing easy accessibility of sewing items.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an owl sewing kit bearing the above objects in mind, which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front view of a sewing kit comprising the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the lines 22 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a view taken on the lines 33 of FIG- URE 1; and
FIGURE 4 is a front view showing a modified form of the invention.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, an owl sewing kit made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include an owl 12 made of wood or other suitable material having a pair of elliptical wings 14 of foam rubber material. Wings 14 are adhered to the concave sides 16 of owl 12 and provide a means for sticking needles 18 and pins 20 into kit 10 for easy accessibility. A loop 22 of semi-circular configuration is fixedly secured to the front of owl 12 and freely and slidably receives scissors 24 made of plastic or other metal material. The finger grips 26 of scissors 24 freely receive a black button 28 which provides support means for scissors 24 and buttons 28 are spaced apart and are secured to oWl 12 by a nail 30 which is freely and slidably received within one of the circular openings 31 of buttons 28. A pair of rectangularly configurated eyebrows 32 are angularly spaced apart and adhered above buttons 28. Eyebrows 32 are made of foam rubber material. A plurality of twigs 34 provide bracket means for spools 36 of thread. Twigs 34 are secured by adhesive or other means to box top 38 and to the lower front of owl 12 thus giving the appearance of feet. Top 38 is provided with a plate 40 of square configuration of smaller dimension than the square shaped configurated top 38 and thus prevents top 38 from sliding around in the opening 42 of box 44. The box 44 is comprised of a pair of parallel, spaced apart side walls, a pair of parallel, spaced part end walls and a substantially square bottom wall. Box
3,221,956 Patented Dec. 7, 1965 ice 44 is hollow for receiving spools of thread 36, thimbles 46 or other small items for sewing.
In operation, needles 18 and pins 20 are stuck into the foam rubber wings 14 thus retaining them for future use. Scissors 24, in order to be removed from loops 22, are lifted upwards by the operator and outward for use. The spools of thread 36 are retained on top 38 by the twigs 34 forming chock means thus preventing them from rolling off of top 38. In order for the operator to receive thimbles 46 or thread spools 36 from within box 44 he grasps the body of the owl 12 and at any convenient point lifts upward exposing the contents of the box 44.
In (FIGURE 4) a modified form of owl sewing kit 48 is shown to include a base 50 of square configuration with an owl shaped figure 52 fixedly secured to the top of base 50.
In operation, base 50 rests upon whatever surface is provided and the sewing items are all exposed for instant use and thus the operation is similar to the herein described main embodiment with the exception that there is no box for the storage of sewing items.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A sewing kit comprising in combination a substantially square box for containing sewing accessories, said square box having a pair of parallel, spaced apart side walls, a. pair of parallel, spaced apart end walls, a substantially square bottom and a removable square top carried upon said box, means secured to the underside of said square top and extending within said box to prevent sliding movement therebetween, an upstanding owl-shaped figure secured at one end thereof to the upper side of said box top, means on said figure for supporting a pair of scissors, said owl-shaped figure having opposite concave sides having pin cushions secured thereto for retaining pins and needles, loop means secured adjacent the other end of said owl-shaped figure for receiving the shank portions of a pair of conventional scissors, a pair of spaced apart pins secured above said loop means, button means removably received by said pair of pins, said pair of pins and said button means adapted to receive the finger openings of a pair of conventional scissors, bracket means secured to the upper side of the square top and being spaced forwardly of the owl-shaped figure whereby spools of thread are retained between said owl-shaped figure and said bracket means.
