HENRY PHILIP DREW,OFN EW YORK, N. Y.
JO|N'IL'ED GAS AND LAMP BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 322,167, dated July 14, 1885.
Application filed June 11, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY PHILIP DREW of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jointed Gas and Lamp Brackets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. I
Figure 1 is'a side elevation of my improvement shown as applied to a two-joint bracket. Fig. 2is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation of the same, taken through the line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional end elevation of the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is modifications.
The object of this invention is to prevent the outer ends of gas or lamp brackets from being swung so far to either side as to set on fire or disfigure curtains or other inflammable materials, or the wall which may be near the said brackets.
The invention is an improvement on Letters Patent Nos. 300,583 and 300,584, granted to me June 17, 1884; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts,as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims. A represents the base of the bracket, which in the case of a gas-bracket is provided with a gas-cock, B, and is attached to the end of a gas-pipe. In the case of a lamp-bracket, the base A is attached directly to the wall.
0 is a stud, which can be attached to the outer end of the base A, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5; or to the upper side of the said base, as shown in my before-named patents; or to the wall or other stationary support, as shown in Fig. 5. 'The stud C is perforated to receive the bar D, which is secured in place by a set-screw, E, passing in through a screw-hole in the said stud. To the ends of the barD are attached the ends of two chains, F, the other ends of which are secured by a screw, G, to a clamp, II. The clamp H is made in the form of an open band having its ends drawn together by a screw,.I, to clamp the swinging arm J of a bracket. Any desired amount of movement can be given to the swinging arm J by loosening the screw I and moving the clamp H in or out upon the the arm J to give more orless slackriess to the chains F. p
In the case of a two-joint bracket a guidebar, K, is placed upon the outer part of the inner arm, L, of the bracket, and. is secured in place by a set-screw, M, which. passes through a screw-hole in the said bar and rests against the said arm. The guide-bar K is made with a hole through its center to receive the arm L, and with holes in its ends,
through which the chains F are passed. To
the chains F, a little in the rear of the guidebar K, are attached balls N, or other suitable stops, of such a size that they cannot pass through the end perforations in the bar K, so that the bar K and the stops N will limit the amount of chain that is drawn through the said bar, and thus limit the space through swung independently of the position of the inner arm. The guide-bar K should be placed so near the outer end of the inner arm, L, of I the bracket that the chains F cannot sag be below the joint 0 connecting the bracketarms J L.
\ Having thus described my invention, Iclairn as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a jointed gas or lamp bracket, the combination, with the chains F and the swinging arms L J of the bracket, of the adjustable guide-bar K, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said chains will be held from sagging below the connectingjoint of the said arms, as set forth.
V 2. In a jointed gas or lamp bracket-,the combination, with the chains F and the adjustable guide-bar K, of the stops N, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the swing of the outer arm of the bracket will be limited independently of the position of the inner arm, as set forth. 7 I
HENRY PHILIP DREW.
