Description

OVERALL GARMENT Filed Nov. 18, 1963 IN VEN TOR.
United States Patent 3,221,342 OVERALL GARMENT James Keith Payne, NE. 58th St. and Lake Washington Blvd, Kirkland, Wash. Filed Nov. 18, 1963, $91. No. 324,497 3 Claims. (Cl. 283) This invention relates to an overall garment, and more particularly to a childs sleeping garment of the nature of one-piece pajamas.
It is intended that this garment be particularly useful for infants who wear diapers and it is a prime object of the invention to provide in an overall garment a construction which, in the finished garment, has a built-in fullness that without undue stretching permits the garment to cover the child wearing rather bulky diapers.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a preferred form of the invention. Like numbers designate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings. In the drawings the FIGURE 1 is a sketch of an infant wearing a garment according to this invention. FIGURE 2 is a front view of a garment in which the invention may be incorporated. FIGURE 3 is a rear view of the garment showing the invention and FIGURE 4 is a rear view of the garment showing the invention in modified form.
Referring to FIGURE 2, the overall garment comprises a front panel formed of parts and 12, the adjacent edges of which overlap and are crossed by detachable fasteners 14 which may, of course, be buttons or snap fasteners or the equivalent. Each front panel includes a waist portion located approximately midway between the neck 16 of the garment and the crotch 18. At the upper extremity of each of the front panels in the shoulder area a sleeve is joined, the same being designated 20 and 22, respectively. Beneath the waist portion of each panel is an integral leg 24 and 26, respectively, each of which may have a built-in foot 28. Or the same may be omitted, as desired. The in seam 30 of each of the legs is preferably detachable-fastener closed from approximately the angle of each leg to and through the crotch of the garment. By this arrangement an infants diapers may be changed without fully removing the garment.
The feature of this garment which, in combination with conventional elements like arms, front panels and integral legs attached thereto is an oval-shaped back panel 32, best seen in FIGURE 3. This panel having its major axis extending from the neck 16 to the crotch 18, is at its periphery joined by a continuous seam of stitching rearwardly at each side to the waist portions of the front panels; rearwardly at each side to the sleeves 20 and 22, and therebetween to the collar band 16 at the nape of the neck. Additionally, back panel 32 by the same continuous seam described above is joined to the upper rear portions of the legs 24 and 26. The minor axis of the back panel 22 extends across the garment and is greater in width than the width of said panel at its lateral center line and is disposed beneath the lateral center line of the back panel.
It has been found that by cutting the back panel 32 in the shape of an oval and by insuring that its width is substantially equal to the lateral width of the garment 3,221,342 Patented Dec. 7, 1965 ice provided by front panels 10 and 12 in the waist portion a garment as has been described will have a fullness in the seat area which adequately accommodates the padded rear end of a diapered infant. Also panel 32 imparts a fullness across the back in the shoulder area tending to provide freedom of arm movement that is not ordinarily available with more conventional garments.
In FIGURE 4 a modification is illustrated in that the back panel 34 is gathered or pleated at 36 in the waist area. Such gathering is preferably resilient and is best accomplished by use of a row of stitching in which an elastic thread is used.
The back oval panel, plain 32 or resiliently tucked together 34, provides the infant or child with a greater freedom than available previously as he or she actively moves about in this oval back overall garment, which is made from stretchable and other type fabrics.
1. An overall garment formed of stretchable fabric, comprising:
means forming a fastener-closed, two-part, front panel including a waist portion, each part having a leg covering portion integral therewith; each said leg covering portion extending to the rear and terminating approximately where the wearers leg joins the buttocks;
a sleeve extending outward from the upper outer side of each said front panel above said waist portion; the rear of each sleeve terminating approximately where the wearers arm joins the body;
an oval-shaped unitary back panel disposed in opposition to said front panel and peripherally joined by a continuous seam, rearwardly to each said leg termination, to each said sleeve termination, and to the outer side of each said waist portion of said twopart front panel; and
said oval-shaped panel having its major axis extending from the neck of the garment to the crotch and being of a length in said extension greater than the length of the front panel from the garment neck to the crotch, and the minor axis of said back panel being disposed across said garment beneath the horizontal center line of said back panel and being greater than the width of said panel at said center line.
2. The structure, according to claim 1 in which the oval-shaped back panel is resiliently gathered laterally from edge to edge at the waist of the garment.
3. The structure, according to claim 1, in which the inseam of the bifurcated leg covering means is separablefastener closed from side to side in the crotch area.
