Description

Nov. 30, 195 HOFFMANN 3,220,765
CHAIR WITH ATTACHED TABLE Filed Dec. 7. 1964 Dnwb H H United States Patent 3,220,765 CHAIR WITH ATTACHED TABLE David Holfmann, 21 Bradford Road, Redford :View,
.iohannesburg, Transvaal, Republic of South Africa Filed Dec. 7, 1964, Ser. No. 416,553 Claims priority, appiieation Republic of South Africa,
June 14, 1964, 64/369 3 Claims. ((11. 297-124) This invention relates to a chair, having a table attached to it.
The object of this invention is to provide a chair with an attached table, said table being capable of swinging downwardly to form a back rest for a person sitting on the chair, or of being raised to a horizontal position for use as a table in front of, or to either side of the sitter on the chair.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a chair without arms having one fixed vertical extension of the chair frame supporting a pivoted flat member adapted, when in one position, to form a back for the chair and in a second position, forming an attached table.
Further features of the invention provide for the chair to be foldable having a frame consisting of a pair of relatively straight top inverted U-shaped members having their sides connected crosswise to form four legs, with a flexible seat attached to and between the said tops, with an extension projecting vertically from a top of one member, and having a horizontal extension supporting the said pivoted fiat member, and a spring catch for holding said flat member in a position for use as a table.
In the accompanying drawings a preferred example of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 shows the chair with a back rest,
FIG. 2 is similar to FIG. 1 but showing the back rest turned to act as a table,
FIG. 3 shows the chair folded,
FIG. 4 is an enlarged view of the back of the back rest or underside of the table, and
FIG. 5 indicates the positions of the locking pin for the table.
In the drawings the frame of the chair is shown as consisting of a pair of inverted U-shaped members 11 and 12 having the sides thereof pivoted at 13 and 14 in a crosswise manner so that the chair can be folded or opened as shown to provide four legs.
One of the frame members 11 is extended to provide the vertical member 15 which is bent to provide a horizontal support 16. Hinged or pivoted on 16 is a fiat member 17 which in FIG. 1 hangs substantially vertical from 16 and forms a back for the chair.
In FIG. 2 the flat member 17 has been turned to be fixed temporarily substantially horizontally and to form an attached table or arm for the chair.
In FIG. 4 is shown a convenient form of pivot hinge and catch for the flat member 17. The back of 17 is shown in FIG. 4 and the vertical member 15 and the horizontal supporting member 16 are shown. Members 18 are brackets secured to the back of 17 and member 19 is a sleeve secured to brackets 18 and slipped over support member 16.
Disc 20 is secured to 16 and 21 is a compression spring located between a washer 28 and disc 21 at one end of 16. Member 22 is a pin secured to a bracket 18 and, due to spring 21, is pressed against disc 23. In FIG. 5 the position of pin 22 is indicated at 24 when fiat member 17 15 vertical, and when it is horizontal the P111 22 Wlll be as 7 shown in a hole 25.
3,229,765 Patented Nov. 30, 1965 By gripping 15 and pressing fiat member 17 in the direction of the arr-ow 26 the pin 22 will be pushed out of the hole 25 and thus allow the member 17 to be rotated.
In FIG. 3 the chair is shown folded for transport. It will be observed that the U-shamd member 12 of the chair frame is longer than the member 11 to which it is attached at 13 and 14. The legs 27 when under the table 17 as shown in FIG. 2 make a firmer support for the table and, at the same time, when the table 17 is turned downwardly to form a back, as in FIG. 1 the longer legs 27 prevent the sitter from tipping backwardly.
The frame of the chair comprising the straight topped inverted U-shape members 11 and 12 is made preferably from suitable metal tubing, generally aluminum.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A chair and table combination having front and back inverted U-shaped supports connected together at substantially the midportions thereof and with upper front and rear portions forming support means for a seat mounting and with a seat thereon, and the lower portions forming front and back legs therefor, one only of said legs having an integral rigid extension projecting upwardly considerably beyond the seat, said rigid extension having a right angle bend portion at its upper end substantially parallel with said upper rear portion of the said back support and forming a horizontal support, a combined back rest and table member rotatably mounted on said horizontal support with the plane of said member substantially parallel to said horizontal support and with said support terminating short of an edge of the said member, cooperative means between said horizontal support and said back rest and table member permitting said member to be rotated and held in either of two operative positrons, 111 one of which positions the member is substantially vertical for functioning as a back rest and in another of which positions the member is substantially horizontal for serving as a table.
2. The invention as defined by claim 1, wherein the said front and back legs forming said lower portions of the said supports are in crossed relation and the midportion connections are pivotal, and the said seat is flexible whereby to facilitate folding the chair.
3. The invention as defined by claim 1, wherein said cooperative means embodies a sleeve secured to the back of the back rest and table member and having said horizontal support extending therethrough, and the said sleeve being axially shiftable on said support for facilitating the said holding of the member in either of the said two operative positions.
