Description

Nov. 2, 1965 L. H. MORIN SEPARATOR BOX AND PIN Filed Feb. 3, 1964 INVENTOR. Lou/s H Mom/v /lwm HTTORNE Y United States Patent 3,214,817 SEPARATOR BOX AND PIN Louis H. Morin, Bronx, N.Y. (125 Beechwood Ave., New Rochelle, N.Y.) Filed Feb. 3, 1964, Ser. No. 342,054 1 Claim. (Cl. 24-20511) This invention relates to separators for separable fastener stringers employing box and pin members and, particularly, wherein the pin member of the separator includes means establishing a positive interlock between the pin member and the scoop adjacent the box member. More particularly, the invention deals with a structure of this type and kind, wherein the scoops are of the center ledge-type. Still more particularly, the invention deals with a structure of the character defined, wherein the box and pin members of the separator include extended heel portions for establishing a greater anchorage of the box and pin on the associated tapes of the fastener stringers.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
FIG. 1 is an enlarged side view of box and pin members of a separator, showing adjacent end portions of two separable fastener stringers employing center ledge scoops, with parts of the construction broken away and in section.
FIG. 2 is a diagrammatic perspective view of one end portion of the pin member of the separator, with the stringer tape removed; and
FIG. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of FIG. 1, with part of the construction broken away.
In FIG. 1 of the drawing, I have shown, in part, at 10, the stringers of a separable fastener, upon the beaded edges 11, 11' of which are fixed cast or molded scoops 12, 12 of what I term the center ledge-type. Each scoop includes a mounting end portion 13, 13' and a coupling end portion, including a male head 14, 14 joining the mounting end portion in side substantially V- shaped recesses 15, 15' forming the female coupling portion, including the ledges 16, 16' operating in recessed sides 17, 17 of scoops of the opposed stringer.
At 18 and 19 I have shown the box and pin members of the separator. The member 18 includes a box portion 20, recessed as seen at 21 at one side thereof to receive the main body portion of the pin member 19. The recess 21 has a reduced side extension 21 for receiption of the tape and heel portions of the member 19, later described, the recess 21 being clearly illustrated in the broken-away portion of FIG. 1. The recess 21, 21' has an extended portion 22 opening through the end of the box 20. The recess 21 is of greater width than the extension 22, which forms in the box a shoulder 23 checking inward movement of the pin member 19.
The opposed side of the box has a recess 24 of a cross-sectional contour to receive the head 11 and a narrower recess 25 opening outwardly through the side of the box 20 for reception of the stringer tape 10.
Extending inwardly from the box 20, the member 18 has a bar portion 26 arranged primarily upon the bead. This bar portion between the box 20 and the bevelled inner end 27 of the bar 26 includes extended heel portions 28, establishing a more secure mounting of the box member 18 upon the stringer tape 10, including the bead 11 thereof. It will be apparent that the end scoop 12 abuts or is arranged in close proximity to the inner edge portion 29 of the bar portion 26.
The pin member 19 extends longitudinally of the tape 10 and the head 11' and has a reversely curved outer 3,214,817 Patented Nov. 2, 1965 edge 30 terminating at the inner end of the pin member in a straight portion 31 arranged in close proximity to the inner straight edge 32 of the bar portion 26. The inner edge portion of the member 19 is reversely curved, as indicated at 33, and extending beyond the curved portion 33 is a reduced thickness elongated heel portion 34, again establishing a more secure attachment of the pin member to the stringer tape 10'.
Considering FIG. 1, it will appear that the lower rounded edge 33' of 33 seats on the wall of the recess 21 where the reduced portion 21' extends therefrom and it will here also be noted that the lower portion 34 of the heels 34 operate in the reduced recess 21'.
The inner end of the pin member 19 has a tapered wall 35, as well as a short straight wall 36 adapted to abut the end scoop 12, as shown in FIG. 1. The outer edge portion of the member 19, at its inner end, has a V-shaped recess 37, generally similar to one of the recesses 15, 15' and in the recess 37 is arranged a shelf or ledge 38, generally similar to the shelves or ledges 16' of the scoops, thus establishing a positive coupling engagement with the head 14 of the end scoop 12.
Formation of the recess 37 forms at the inner end of the outer edge portion of the member 19 a projecting lip or tongue 39, which operates in the adjacent side recess 15 of the end scoop 12, as clearly illustrated, in further establishing coupling engagement of the pin member with the scoop 12. It will also be apparent that the lip or tongue portion 39 is recessed, as seen at 40, to receive the adjacent ledge 16 of the scoop 12 in still further establishing the coupling engagement of the pin member 19 with the end scoop 12.
The coupling engagement of the pin member 19 with the end scoop 12 positively retains the member 19 against any possible relative movement with respect to the end scoop 12 when the parts are in coupled engagement, as illustrated. This structure further simplifies coupling and uncoupling of the stringer 10' with the stringer 11) in the operation of coupling and separating the stringers and overcomes the problem usually experienced in joining box and pin members in separable fasteners of the type and kind under consideration.
By utilizing the long heel portions 28 and 34 on the box and pin members, the gripping surface of these members on the tapes is materially extended, resulting in a much stronger bond of the box and pin members to the stringer tapes.
Considering FIG. 3 of the drawing, it Will appear that the box 20 is materially greater in thickness than the bar portion 26 and outer surfaces of the box 20 are preferably recessed, as seen at 41. It will also be apparent, from a consideration of FIG. 1 of the drawing, that the lower portion of the heels 34 of the pin member directly operate in the reduced side recess 21 of the box member and, by reason of this construction, wear on the tape of the stringer 10' is dispensed with, thus producing long service of coupling and separating separable fastener stringers of the type and kind under consideration. In this connection, it will also appear, from a consideration of FIG. 1 of the drawing, that the mounting end portions 13, 13' of the scoops include projecting heels which are alined with the heels 28 and 31 of the box and pin members of the separator, so as to prevent wear of the usual slider on the tapes of the stringers in coupling and uncoupling the stringers.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a separable fastener, stringers employing interengaging scoops having coupling heads with male and female portions and ledges at sides of the female coupling portions of the scoops adapted to intermesh with male portions, a separator at one end portion of the stringers, said separator comprising a box member secured to one stringer and a pin member secured to the other stringer, the inner end portion of the box member being defined by an elongated bar extending longitudinally of the stringer, said bar having at its inner end a surface disposed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said bar and a bevelled surface contiguous with said first mentioned surface and with the outside edge thereof outwardly disposed in a longitudinal direction in relation to said first mentioned surface and a scoop on the stringer of said box member adjoining said first mentioned surface on the end of said bar portion, one end portion of the pin member being insertable into a recessed portion of the box member when coupling said stringers, the other end portion of the pin member having means operatively engaging the head and ledge at one side of the scoop fixed to the stringer of said box and adjoining the inner end portion of said box member, and said pin member having at its inner end a surface disposed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said pin member and a bevelled surface contiguous with the first mentioned surface of said pin member with the outside edge thereof outwardly disposed in a longitudinal direction in relation to said first mentioned surface of said pin member, and a scoop on the stringers of said pin member adjoining said first mentioned surface on the end of said pin member.
