This invention relates to separable fasteners employing stringers, wherein the scoops of the stringers include wear heel portions protruding onto the Stringer tapes to protect the tape against abrasion or wear in operation of the slider along the stringers in coupling and uncoupling the same. More particularly, the invention deals with a fastener of this type and kind, wherein the separator, comprising the box and pin parts, includes, at the sides thereof, projecting wear heel portions, upon which the flanges of the slider ride in moving the slider onto the separator to prevent wear on that portion of the Stringer tape adjacent the pin `and box parts of the separator.

The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:

FIG. l is an enlarged plan view of one end portion of a separable fastener Stringer, parts of the construction being broken away and in section and illustrating the slider in a position closely adjacent the stop position of the slider on the separator; and

FIG. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of FIG.1.

12, 12 are attached, part only of the scoops being shown, the scoops having projecting wear heel portions 13, 13' upon which the side flanges 14 of a conventional slider 15 operate to protect the tape against abrasion or wear in movement of the slider along the stringers in coupling and uncoupling the same. In FIG. 1, the connecting web at the wide end portion of the slider is indicated in section at -16.

At 17 and 18 I have shown the pin and box parts of a separator xed to one end portion of the stringers and arranged upon the beaded edges 11 and 12 of the Stringer tapes, as clearly noted in FIG. 2 of the drawing. The pin part is in the form of an elongated pin member, one end 19 of which is adapted to extend into the V socket or chamber 20 of the box part 18, the box part having la protruding pin-like portion 21, upon which the slider rides.

The pin part 17 has a projecting portion 22 adapted to bear upon the pin part 21, as clearly noted in FIG. 1 of the drawing, the outer end section 22a of said projection being of tapering form to cause said pin part to be cammed laterally into proper position in relation to the box part v18 as said pin part is moved along the pin-like portion 21 of said box part in the process of assembling the separator. The inner end of the projection 22 is extended, as indicated at 23 to overlie the end of the pin part 21. The pin part 17 has projecting wear heels 24 extending the full length thereof and adapted to extend onto the tape, adjacent the bead 11, as is clearly noted in FIG. 2 of the drawing, the extension of the heel 24 being suicient to provide a long Wear surface, upon which the flanges 14 of the slider 15 are adapted to move.

The pin portion 21 of lthe box part 18 has similar extending wear heels 25 which terminate at the box portion 26. The box portion 26 of the box part 18 denes shoulders 27 on opposite sides of said box portion serving as stops checking movement of the slider on the Patented June 27, 1961A ICC separator. Here again, the heels 25 serve to provide wea1 surfaces, upon which the flanges 14 of they slider 15 are adapted to move.

With a structure as defined, it will appear that the entire tape of the stringers will be protected against abrasive wear of the slider and, thus, add materially to the life use of the separable fastener. By providing the Wear heel portions extending the full length of the pin part 17, it will appear that, in the operation of inserting and removing the pin part with respect to the box part, there will be no possibility of wear upon the tape 10 and this is an operation which is performed as often as the slider is operated in joining and detaching the garment or other parts, to which the stringers 10, -10 are attached.

It will further appear, from a consideration of FIG. 1 of the drawing, that the terminal ends of the

24, 25 are closely adjacent the heel portions l13;, 13' of the scoops so that that part of the tapes, between these heel portions, Lare also protected against any possible wear.

In addition to the foregoing, it will appear that the extended

heels

24 and 25 materially increase the grip of the box and pin on the tape, thus avoiding any possibility of displacement of the box and pin in the extensive use of the fastener. It will, further, appear from a consideration of FIG. l that the heels 24 extend to the free edge of the tape, thus eliminating any possible wear on the tape edge in the `repeated insertion of the pin into the box, as well as in withdrawal of the pin from the box. Further, it will appear that, in the operation of inserting the pin into the box, the extended heel portions provide a metal to metal contact between the pinand box parts, as the pin is inserted into the cavity 20 and, by reason of this metal to metal contact, the pin will slide freely into and out of the box part.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In separable fasteners, the combination comprising stringers with tapes and scoops mounted on beaded edges of said tapes, a slider having ilanged side walls mounted on the scoops of the stringers to couple and uncouple said stringers, said scoops having wear heels extending onto the Stringer tapes adjacent to said beaded edges for the edges of said flanged side walls and flanking opposite faces of said tapes, and a separator comprising a box part and a pin part, said parts being mounted on end portions of the beaded edges of the Stringer tapes, said box part having a box-like portion dening a socket and provided with Ia slot along one side of said box-like portion yand a pin-like portion extending inwardly from the inner end of said box-like portion along the tape on which said box part is mounted and located on one side of said box part to form an entry end to said socket on the other side of said box part, said box part having a pair of wear heels extending along the outer side of said pin-like portion and flanking opposite faces of the tape to which said box part is connected, said pin part comprising a pin member adapted to extend through said entry end into said socket to attach the end portions of the tapes together and extending along the tape on which said pin part is mounted and alongside of said pinlike portion, said pin part having a pair of wear heels extending along the outer side of said pin member and flanking opposite faces of the tape on which said pin part is mounted, the last mentioned pair of wear heels being adapted to slide along said slot when said pin member is inserted in said socket, the slider being adapted to ride along said pin-like portion and said pin member, and said pin-like portion and said pin member defining shoulders along their outer sides facing outwardly sidewise and extending from the corresponding wear heels to confine the pin member in the socket against outward side movement and to confine the slider against side movement in relation to said pinlike portion and said pin member, the wear heels on said separator and on said scoops being in line to permit the side walls of the slider to operate on said wear heels in the transition of the slider between the scoops land the separator and vice versa.
