Be it known that I, GYnUs WVHIsLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brighton, in the county of ashington and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashing-llfachines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art IO to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I

This invention has relation to washing-machines and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim. a

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the water box or tub, which is of elongated form, having parallel sides B, in the upper portion of which are provided bearings (J for the journals of the swinging rubber.

The rubber D consists of the barred end frames, E and F, having journals 9 9, upon which they swing, a barred bottom frame, H, pivoted at its ends to the lower port-ions of the end frames, and a loose barred frame, J, having projecting ends is, adapted to be in- 5 serted between the bars of the swinging frames E and F.

The rubber is constructed as follows: To form the end frames the upright bars (t are placed parallel to each other, and are con- 0 nected to the transverse journal-rod I), wash ers 0 being placed on the rod between the bars. At their lower ends the bars a of each frame are connected by transverse pivot-rods (1, upon which are also pivoted the ends of the bottom bars, e, which are parallel to each other, and in the intervals between the bars (4. These bottom bars connect the lower portions of the upright frames E and I and form a rack on which the clothes are placed. The

bottom bars are notched at intervals, as shown An upper rack, J, or pressure-frame, of similar form to the bottom rack, is made of parallel bars Z, which are connected by transverse rods m. The ends it of these bars project beyond the rods m, and are designed to be seated between the bars a of the end frames in the int-erspaces s. The bars of the frame J are notched on the under side, as indicated, the notches of the bars Z and e alternating with each other. The notches of the upper rack-frame, J, and of the lower frame, H, are designed to afford purchase whereby these racks may hold to the articles placed between in the washing operation.

The side bars of the end frame E are extended above the top of the tub and provided with a cross-bar, Z, to form an operatinghandle.

The action of this rubber is a longitudinal swinging motion, which moves the articles to and fro in the water, and at the same time up and down. The leverage of the end frames upon the loose rack moves it backward as the rubber swings forward, so that. a continuous reciprocating rubbing movement on the goods is kept up between the loose rack and the bottom rack. The leverage of the end racks also compresses the loose rack toward the bottom rack at each end alternately as the rubber swings back and forth, inducing a swinging action on the goods, which materially facilitates the cleansing operation.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The combination, with the elongated tub having the journal-bearings O, of the swinging barred end frame E, extended to form a handlc, the swinging barred end frame F, the parallel barred bottom pivoted to the end framcs,and the parallel barred loose pressureframe J, having its ends seated in the intervals between the bars of the end frames and the adjacent sides of the bars 0 and Z, having notches, substantially as specified.
