GAR COUPLING. No. 321,271. Patented June 30, 1885.
X ['fjw lffi mmnnununn WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORNEYS UNrTEn STATES ATENT FFlC E LEE ANDERSON, OF rAEIs, TEXAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,271, dated June 30, 1885.
Application filed October 30, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, LEE ANnERsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a vertical sectional view of my car-coupling, and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices for coupling cars; and it is designed as an improvement upon the patent granted to me June 20, 1882, No. 259,973.
These improvements consist in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A indicates the draw-head, which is open on its upper side forwardly from the pivotal point of the coupling-bar to permit a vertical movement of the same therein. The vertical lateral walls a of the draw-head are made flaring at their outer ends, and. provided at their inner ends with horizontal transverse perforations b, for the receptionof a bolt, B, for pivoting the said couplingbar between the 5 jaws of the draw-head.
the operator or brakeman.
incline forwardly and downwardly from its rise a, which is below and forward of the pivotal point of the coupling-bar. By this construction it will be seen that the connectingbar will be permitted to drop below a horizontal plane to engage a coupling-bar of'a car of less height, and will at the same time be held up above the front of the floor Z sufficient] y to admit the coupling of the opposite car. The draw-head A is also provided on its under side, beneath the pivotal point of the coupling-bar, with a vertical recess, 0, for the passage of an operating-lever, D, attached to the rear end of the said connecting-bar, the upper end of the bar being longitudinally recessed, as shown at d, for the reception of the forward end of the said lever, which is secured thereto by screws or other suitable fastening devices. This operating-lever, connected to the rear end of the coupling-bar,extends downward through the recess in the draw -head, and then turning extends rearwardly beneath the draw-head to within convenient reach of The rear vertical Wall, 6, of the draw-head is also provided with an under vertical recess, E, forming a receptacle for the bend of the lever.
From the foregoing description, .taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what
