Filed June 14, 1963, Ser. No. 287,986 4 Claims. (Cl. 3084) This application is a continuation-in-part of our parent application Serial No. 15,959, filed March 18, 1960, now abandoned.
This invention is a portable adjustable assembly for pressure drilling. After much experimentation over a number of years, it has been found possible to greatly simplify the entity or assembly of our parent application.
Objects of this improvement are to provide an assembly employing two plates, relatively slidable, and interengaged for positively retaining a drill core tube, against the wall of an aperture in one plate of the assembly, by hand or foot pressure of the user; to provide an assembly for use in drilling holes vertically, horizontally, or at an angle; and to provide an assembly which may be made very small for use with small drills, against which latter the movable plate of the assembly is engaged, to hold the drill in selected position while in use.
Other objects of the invention will be manifest from the following description of the present preferred forms of the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of a large plate assembly constructed in accordance with this invention, dotted lines being used to indicate the retracted position of the auxiliary plate;
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken on the lines 2-2 of FIG. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows and showing in dotted lines, the auxiliary plate in extreme positions at each end of the base plate;
FIG. 3 is .a cross sectional view, taken on the lines 33 of FIG. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of the assembly shown in position for angular drilling, the core drill tube being shown in dotted lines;

The assembly of this invention is generally designated 10 and consists of an apertured base plate 11 and an auxiliary plate 12. The plates are slidably interengaged by bending the ends of plate 12 loosely around the lateral margins of base plate 11, as indicated at 13. The under surface of the auxiliary plate is equipped with a strip of rubber 14, serving .as a pad or cushion, for a purpose more fully hereinafter set out.
In one embodiment of the invention, an edge of the plate 12 is turned upwardly to provide an inclined foot or hand pressure extension 15 to effect a slight rocking movement of plate 12. This insures positive pressure of a drill core tube, as shown at 16, against wall of aperture 17 in base plate 11. One end of the aperture is contracted and substantially V shaped at its extreme end. In addition, the edge of the auxiliary plate, which engages the tube, may be provided with a V shape recess 18 to increase purchase on the tube, regardless of the shape of the aperture 18. Suction cups 19 are secured to the bottom of apertured plate 11, at strategic points, to minimize possibility of said plate slipping, while in use. Preferably each cup carries a screw-threaded bolt 20 adapted for engagement in a complemental opening in the plate 11. A washer 21 is interposed between a shank 22 on each 3,210,134 Patented Oct. 5, 1965 cup 19 to provide abutments at one end of both the large and small size apertured plates. With the larger plates, the washers serve as abutments at both ends. Only one suction cup is used on one end of the small plate, which latter carries an independent abutment 23 on the top of the plate, which will limit movement of plate 12 in an obvious manner. The rubber strip 14, on each of the auxiliary plates, serves to increase tension on the apertured base plate, when pressure is applied to the auxiliary plate. The strip further tends to prevent marring of the surface of the base plate.
For angle drilling, as illustrated in FIG. 4, we have found that best results are obtained by elevating the ends of the plate 11 above the work, by the use of conventional means, such as blocks 24, positioned as shown in FIG. 4. The angle of drilling is determined by the location of the plate 12 on the plate 11, the plate 12 being held in a predetermined set position, by pressure of the core tube thereon, approximately as shown in the drawing.
The assembly here shown and described is adapted for drilling rock, concrete, granite, etc. which require drill core tubes of sizes up to four inches in diameter. The large plate assembly is here preferred, using an auxiliary plate 12 with upwardly inclined extension 15 for exerting foot pressure. The smaller plate 12' is adequate for use in wall and ceiling work, where small drills are used. In this latter work, hand pressure will suffice to hold an edge of an auxiliary plate directly against the drill, there being adequate play between the auxiliary plate and drill to permit proper functioning of the latter, for forming a. recess of the desired depth in the latter.
While we have herein shown and described preferred forms of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood, that various changes may be made therein, without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A portable adjustable assembly for pressure drilling including a pair of plates, one of which is apertured to permit passage of a drill therethrough for engagement with work, over which the assembly is positioned, the other plate being slidable on the apertured plate to engage the drill and hold it against the wall of the aperture in the first plate, an elastic strip on the slidable plate to increase the tension on the apertured plate when pressure is applied to the slidable plate, the aft edge of the slidable plate being upturned for applying hand or foot pressure to the slidable plate to effect a slight rocking movement of the slidable plate to insure positive pressure of the drill against the wall of the aperture in the first said plate.
2. The portable, adjustable assembly of claim 1, in which the wall of the aperture in the first plate, at the point engageable by the drill, is substantially V-shape.
3. The portable, adjustable assembly of claim 2 with the addition of suction cups secured to the apertured plate at strategic points to prevent slippage of the assembly when held against the work.
4. The assembly of claim 3 with the inclusion of means carried by the apertured plate and engaged with the suction cups to permit adjustment of the cups to especially adapt the invention for special kinds of work.

Claims (1)

1. A PORTABLE ADJUSTABLE ASSEMBLY FOR PRESSURE DRILLING INCLUDING A PAIR OF PLATES, ONE OF WHICH IS APERTURED TO PERMIT PASSAGE OF A DRILL THERETHROUGH FOR ENGAGEMENT WITH WORK, OVER WHICH THE ASSEMBLY IS POSITIONED, THE OTHER PLATE BEING SLIDABLY ON THE APERTURED PLATE TO ENGAGE THE DRILL AND HOLD IT AGAINST THE WALL OF THE APERTURE IN THE FIRST PLATE, AN ELASTIC STRIP ON THE SLIDABLE PLATE TO INCREASE THE TENSION ON THE APERTURED PLATE WHEN PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO THE SLIDABLE PLATE, THE AFT EDGE OF THE SLIDABLE PLATE BEING UPTURNED FOR APPLYING HAND OR FOOT PRESSURE TO THE SLIDABLE PLATE TO EFFECT A SLIGHT ROCKING MOVEMENT OF THE SLIDABLE PLATE TO INSURE POSITIVE PRESSURE OF THE DRILL AGAINST THE WALL OF THE APERTURE IN THE FIRST SAID PLATE.
