UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY JUDSON OHA PIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
APPARATUS FOR TREATING SUGAR-CANE.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,006, dated June 30, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J UDsoN OHAPIN, a citizen of the United States of North America, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Treating Sugar-Cane, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for treating sugar-cane; and its object is to facilitate delivery of the shredded cane and the juice flowing from the cane-shredder to the rolls, press, or vessel by or in which the shredded cane is treated.
The novelty consists in the peculiar combination and the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figureis a side elevation, with parts in section.
Carriers for conveying the cane to the shred der, cane-shredders and rolls, and other devices For expressing or extracting the juice from the cane are in common use and require no description herein.
In the drawing, A represents a cane-carrier of ordinary construction. B is a caneshredder, which may be provided with hopper and cover, as shown at B and B respectively; and 0 represents the juice-extractor, which, in this instance, is an ordinary set of rolls. D represents the chute with raised sides for conducting the juice from the shredder to the extractor. It is constructed with a watertight bottom, and may be made of any suitable material, such as hard rubber, metal, or wood lined with metal.
the cane to the hopper, and another carrier belted thereto conveys the shredded cane from the shredding mechanism to the extractor, the
last-mentioned carrier bei ng located in a chute,
water-tight and with inclined bottom to allow th e j uice extracted to gravitate to the extractor.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the carrier A, hopper B, shredder B, and extractor C, of the water-tight chute D with inclined bottom, and the carrier E, located in said chute and connecting the shredder with the extractor, and the belt E, connecting the two carriers A E, all arranged for joint operation as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 29th day of December, 1884.
HENRY JUDSON CHAPIN.
