No. 320,874. Patented June 23, 1885.l
. W I 5 e I llNrTED STA'rEs ATENT Erica,
EDVIN J. HOVE, OF NEVARK, NEV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO CARTER, SLOAN & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
BuTToN.
PECIFICATION forming'part of Letters PatentNo. 320,874, datel June 23, 1885.
Application filed May 2, 1885. (No model.)
To aZZ witam it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN J. HowE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my im- Io proved button inverted. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
My invention relates to the class of buttons which have a laterallyswinging arm or shoe; and I will now proceed to describe the same,
referring to the accompanying drawings, on
which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both of the Views.
The face of the button, A, is preferably made oblong, although I do not deem this essential,
i as it may be of any suitable design or configuration, and ornamented in any desired manner.
On the under side of the face A, at its ends or two of its sides, if the part A should be A made round, are inclined flanges 01' lugs a a, which are highest at or near the center, and beveled toward each of the outer sides or edges of the plate A, forming, practically, a doubleinclined plane the apex or center of which is cut away, as at c o, thus forming four angular lugs, whose lowest portions are at the edges of the face plate or button, and which gradually rise toward the center of the back of the button.
3 5 Midway between the ends of the button, and secured to the back thereof, is the rigid post O, which is provided with a shoulder or tenon at its inner end.
The arm B, which is provided with a hole or aperture near its central portion, is fitted on the shouldered post and held loosely thereon by the cap b. The arm B has angular or Curved ends, as shown, and it is adapted to turn laterally on the post O, as will be apparent.
The arm B, in the form I have illustrated, and which is the preferred form, is made of spring metal, and, when rotated on its bearing on the post C, the angular or curved ends ride up the inclined lugs from opposite sides of the face-plate, and when in a plane go about parallel with the button-face these ends,
by Virtue of the spring` of the metal, drop into the notches c between the inclined lugs or flanges and lock the button iu place.
The arm B, I sometimes make rigid, and insert a small spiral spring on the tenoned post between said arm and the small cap b, and while I deem this the equivalent of the springarm, in practice I prefer the latter. It will be seen that I might also make the arm in two pieces instead of one, as shown, in which case 'a hole will be provided in the inner end of each arm to fit the tenoned post, and the same result would be attained without departing 'from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A button whose face is provided 011 its under side with lugs oppositeflto each other, and having notches between them, a central shouldered post, and a laterally-swinging arm having bent or angular ends, the latter adapted to be rotated after insertion in the buttonhole of a cuff or analogous article, and locked in the notches between the lugs, substantially as described.
2. A button composed of the face-plate A, having the inelined lugs or fianges a on its under side, with the notches c between them, the shouldered or tenoned post O, the swinging spring-arm B, and the cap b, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony Whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDVIN J. I-IOWE.
