BEVEL.l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,866, dated June 231 1885 Application tiled November 29, 1884.
'b @ZZ whom, if; may concern.-
Beit known that We, CHARLES FRinss and JOHN N. TODD, citizens of the United States, and residents of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a neW and useful Improvement in Bevels, of which the following' is a specification.
Our invention relates to bevels; and it consists in providing; a bevel-square with a spurwheel on the head of the blade-pivot, in mesh with a pinion, on the pivot of which is a pointer adapted to rotate in a suitably-graduated circle and indicate the number of degrees to which the bevel-blade has been adjusted.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows the front of the instrument; Fig. 2, the same with the graduated plate removed; Fig. 3, the back of the instrument; Fig. 4, a horizontal sectional vienT of Fig. l, and Fig. 5 a detached view ofthe blade-pivot.
A is the stock, preferably of Wood, and B the blade, preferably of metal, having the elongated slot b, by'means of which the blade may be made to slide on its pivot.
tt is the blade-pivot, and has a lug, a', made to fit in the slot b, causing the pivot to turn with the blade.
c is a spur-Wheel on the upper end of the pivot a, and turns ivith the pivot as the blade B is moved.
c is a pinion meshing With the Wheel c and fast to the pivot c2. These are preferably set in a depression in the stock.
d is a pointer secured on the pivot c, and rotates over the face of the plate e. In the dra-Wings two plates, e and e', are shown, the former being cut away in the circle traversed by the pointer, so that the pointer may not (No model.)
scale of ninety degrees it is apparent that a quarter-turn of the blade will cause the pointer to make a complete revolution of the ninety degrees shown on the circle. It is also apparent that any shorter turn of the blade will be indicated in degrees by the pointer-as an eighth turn by forty-five degrees, and so on. If the blade is turned beyond a right angle, the number of degrees is found byv adding ninety to the number indicated by the pointer.
g is a set-screw providedat the back of the stock for clamping the blade and holding it in adjustment. It is desirable to place it in a depression, as shown, so that it may not protrude above the surface of the stock.
Having fully described our invention, what We desire to claim, and secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the stock of a bevelsquare, of a spur-Wheel adapted to be turned by lthe bevelblade, a pinion in mesh With such spur-Wheel and of one-fourth its diameter, a pointer operated by the pinion-pivot, and a graduated scale for indicating the angle of the blade and stock, substantially as set forth.
CHARLES FRIESS. JOHN N. TODD.
