Description
(N0 Model.)
G. W. JAQUBS,
RAIL CHAIR.
Patented June .23, 1885.
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE WARNER JAQUES, OF BURTON, OHIO.
RAIL-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming partvof Letters Patent No. 320,791, dated June 23,1885.
Application led March 1l, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WARNER JAQUEs. of Burton, Geauga county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Rail-Ohair, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved rail-chair which prevents spreading and creeping of the rails, and forms good joints.
The invention consists in the combination, with two side pieces united by a cross-piece, and having tenons on the under side, of a plate 011 which the side and cross piece are placed, which plate has tenons on the bottom and is placed on the sleeper, bolts being passed through the sleeper, the plate, and the side pieces.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of vreference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my iinproved rail-chair, showing it applied. Fig. 2 is a top perspective view of the chair. 3 is a perspective bottom view of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the under side of the bottom plate. Fig. 5 is a top perspective view of the same. Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view of the rail and an end view of the chair.
rIhe chair is formed of two side pieces, A, having their inner sides curved and shaped to t snugly against thesides of the rail,
which side pieces are united at the middle by a cr'osspiece, B, extending from top to bottom, and having its top shaped the same as the head of rail, so that the heads of the rail and the top of the'crosspiece B will form one continuity, as shown in Fig. l. The re cesses between the plates or pieces A are so shaped that an end of a rail, O, can be passed in between them, the ends of the rails abutting against the ends of the cross-piece B. The outside piece, A, is slightly higher than the inside piece, to form a flange for carrying the wheel over the joint.
From the under side of the cross-piece B a tenen, D, projects downward, and from the Fig.
(No model.)
under side of each side piece, A, a short tenon or stud, E, projects at each end.
An aperture, F, is formed in the lower part of each side piece, A, at the middle.
A bottom plate, G, is providedwith a central aperture, H, for the tenen D, with four corner apertures, H, for the tenen E, and with two apertures, J-one at each side edge which correspond with the apertures F in the pieces A. y
A tenon, K, is formed on the under side of the plate G at each corner.
The plate G is placed upon the sleeper or tie L, the tenons K passing into apertures in the top of the sleeper. The pieces A B are placed on the plate G, the tenen D passing into the central aperture, H, and the tenons E into the corner apertures, H, and the bolts M are passed up through the apertures J and E, and then nuts N are secured on the upper ends of the bolts and drawn up tight, whereby the rail-ehair is clamped securely ou the sleeper or tie.
The nuts on the lower ends of the bolts M are countersunk in the sleepers, and elastic washers h are placed under the nuts on the upper ends of the said bolts M.
The chair cannot creep or give laterally. It holds the rail securely, forms an even joint, and is safe.
Thev chair is made of east-iron or steel.
The side pieces, A, fit against the under side of the rail.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patentl. ln a railchair, the combination, with t-he side pieces, A, united by the crossspiece B, and provided with the tenons D E, and the plate G, having apertures i'or the tenons, and also having tenons K on its under side, of the bolts M, for holding the chair on the sleeper.
L, the nuts on the lower ends ofthe bolts being countersunk in the under side of the sleeper, and of elastic washers, and iron washers, and nuts ou the upper ends of the bolts, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a rail-chair, the combination, with the side pieces, A, united by a cross-piece, B, and provided with the tenons D E, of the plate G, having apertures for the tenons, and also Athe sleeper and through the bottom parts of having tenons K ou its under side, substauthe pieces A, substantially as herein shown Io tially as herein shown and described. mid described.
3, In a rail-chair the combination with 1 Y T 1 the side pieces, A, uilted by :L cross-piece, B, GIORGL VARD 13R JAQUES' and provided with apertures F, and the ten- XVitnesses: ons D and E, of the plate G, having npertures H J, and of the bolts M, passed through l RoB'r. VILLARD, A. L. WILLARD.
