RAIL JOINT. APPLICATION FILED 8.29. 1918.

SATES RAIL-JOINT.
Application filed April 29, 1918.
To all whom 2'2? may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. WUssow, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Bonduel, in the county of Shawano and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in rail joints, and refers particularly to improvements upon the type of rail joint or track fastening disclosed in the patent granted to Benjamin Wolhaupter, on September 17 1912, the main object of this 1nvention being to overcome certain defects found to exist in said construction, which may be stated to consist in insuifioient support for the head of the rails and the lack of means for locking the nuts used in securing the sections on each side of the meeting ends of the rails.
The main purpose of my invention is the provision of a rail joint or track fastening which will properly join the meeting ends of the rails and provide a strong and substantial support for the rails and which will also provide efficient means for locking the nuts on the fastening bolts thus insuring an efficient, desirable and practical improvement in this class of inventions.
With this object in view my invention consists of a rail joint embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as shown, described and claimed herein.
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a rail joint embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the nut locking means, and
Fig. f is a detail view of a modification.
Referring by letter to the drawings in which similar letters of reference denote the same parts in all the views:
, The letter A designates the tread or head of the rail, B the web and G the foot or base all of the usual and well known construction,'and fitting upon one side of the rails is the fish plate D, having the upper face E, resting under the head of the rail, the base portion G, formed with the flange Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Serial No. 231,325.
H, to receive the securing means J, and also formed with the foot inclosing portion K, while for strengthening the said plate the segies of ribs or braces L, are formed on one si e.
This fish plate D, rests upon one side of the web of the rail while upon the other side is placed the plate M, formed with the head supporting flange N and the foot engaging fiange N which construction of said plate thus provides the channel 0, to receive the cushion strip P, and fitting against the outer vertical face of said strip is the flat vertical plate Q, formed with the outer flange R, to receive the fastenings S, and is also formed with the horizontal portion S which forms a support for the other side of the foot of the rails.
From this construction it will be noted that the rails are secured between the two fish plates, that the said plates form perfect supports for the foot and head of the rails and that the said plates are separate, which permits easy and quick application or removal of the plates and to secure the ends of the rails and the two sections in proper relation thereto I employ the headed transverse bolts T, whose threaded ends U receive the nuts U and said nuts are secured when home by the nut receiving recesses V, on the nut locking bar V having slots W, to receive the securing means W to fastensaid bar in place.
I claim:
In combination with the ends of the rails, the plate disposed on one side having a vertical wall engaging the foot and head of the rails, a foot receiving portion and integral braces, a plate on the opposite side of the rails engaging the head and foot thereof and formed with a channel, a cushion strip fitting said channel, a plate having a foot supporting portion and a vertical portion resting against the face of said cushion strip, bolts for securing the rails and plates in proper relation, and nuts on said bolts.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
HENRY F. WUSSOW, J R.
