VALVE-GEAR FOR DIRECT-ACTING STEAM-PUMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,764, dated June 23, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. DEAN, of Indianapolis, in the count-y of Marion and State oi' Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Valve-Gear for DirectAActing Steam-Pumps, of which the following` is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of :my invention is to provide new and improved means for controlling the motion of an auxiliary piston carrying the main valve by `an auxiliary valve which is operated from the piston-rod.
The invention consists of an auxiliary piston which carries the main valve of an auxiliary valve and ports and of connections for imparting a long and adjustable stroke to the said auxiliary valve.
The invention also consist-s of various parts and details, hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiieation, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the igures.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved steam-pump, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, showing` the auxil iary piston and valve. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the valveerod and its connections. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is an inverted view of auxiliary valve.4 Fig. 6 is a plan view of the valve-seat, and Fig. 7 is a plan view of auxiliary valve and valveseat.
The steam-cylinder A is provided with the piston B, having a piston-rod, C, which operates the pump W. The steam-cylinder A is also provided with the usual port-holes, c, a and a2.
The main valve D is att-ached to the auxiliary piston E and moves with the same in the sub-cylinder E', which is provided with the cylinder-ports b and b and exhaust-port c, and with the valve-seat E2.
The auxiliary valve F slides on the valveseat E2, and is provided on its under side with the diagonal exhaust-cavities d d. The valverod F is secured to the valve F, and has its outer bearing in a stud, F2, fastened to a post, F3, bolted to the main frame of the steampump. To the valve-rod F is secured in any suitable manner the dog F".

The lever G is fulcrumed on the stud F2, and is provided on its lower end with a fork, which engages a stud on the dog C', which is attached to the pist-cured Gand moves with the same.
The upper end of the lever G is provided with a curved slot, G, in which is fastened adj ustably the stud G2. Alink, H, connects the dog FL with the stud Gi. The slot G in lever G is a segment of acirele, of which the link II is the radius, so that any adjustment of the stud G in the slot G2 will not change the position of the valve.
lThe ports L b and care arranged in the shape of a triangle on the face of valve-seat E2, and the diagonal cavities d and d on the under side of the auxiliary valve F diverge from each other, whereby the cavity d connects the ports b and c, and the cavity d connects the ports b and c, when the auxiliary valve F is in extreme positions.
The operation is as follows: W'hen the main piston B moves from left to right, the auxiliary valve Fis moved in an opposite direction by the valve-rod F and connecting-link H, attached to the upper part of the lever G,
which is actuated by the pistolrrod C and dog C', carrying` the lower end of the lever G with it in the movement to the right. The auxiliary valve F opens the port b to admit steam to the sub-cylinder E at the moment the piston B has reached the limit of its stroke, whereby the auxiliary piston E is forced to the left, thereby opening the port a and admitting steam to the cylinder A, and consequently reversing the movement of the piston B. On this returnstroke of the piston B, the piston-rod C swings the upper part of the lever G to the right, and thereby reverses the movement of the auxiliary valve F, whereby the port b is closed, and at the moment the piston B has reached the limit of its outer stroke the port Z is opened by the valve E and steam admitted to the other end of the sub-cylinder E', causing the auxiliary piston E to reverseits motion, there by opening the port a to admit the steam to cylinder A at its outer end, whereby the movement of the piston B is again reversed. By this continuous movement of the auxiliary valve E the ports b and b are kept closed, except at the end of each stroke, at the mo- IOO ment the main piston B is reversed, and as soon as the main piston B begins its returnstroke the auxiliary valve F closes the ports b and b', respectively. This prevent-s any waste of steam in case the auxiliary piston E is worn enough so as to leak as the ports b and b are closed. When the auxiliary valve F is in its extreme outer position and the port b is open to admit steam, as shown in Fig. 7, a connection is established between the port b and the exhaust-port' c by means of the diagonal cavity d in the under side of the auxiliary valve F, and when the said valveFhas shifted toits inner extreme position the port b and the exhaust-port c are connected with each other by the diagonal cavity d in the bottom of auxiliary valve F. This arrangement admits of a short valve with a long stroke, which stroke is derived from the full stroke of the pistonrod O acting on the lower forked part of the lever G, which imparts a reciprocating motion to the valve-rod F by means of connectinglink H. 'Ihe stud G2, being adjusted up or down in the segmental slot G of lever G, increases or diminishes the travel of the auxiliary valve E. If the stud G2 is adjusted up in the slot G, the travel of valve E is increased and ports b and b opened earlier, causing the main piston B to shorten its stroke, and if the stud G2 is moved down in slot G the travel of auxiliary valve is diminished, the ports?) and b opened only at the end of the movement of lever G, thereby increasing the stroke of the main piston B.
The adjusting of stud G2 up 0r down in slot G does not change the relative position of the ports b b and c with the diagonal cavities d and d in auxiliary valve E, as the slot G is segmental, the link H being the radius.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a valve-gear for steam-pumps, the pivoted lever G, deriving its motion from the piston-rod C, and having a segmental slot, G, the link H, the valve-rod F', and the auxiliary sliding valve F, having diagonal cavities d and CZ, in combination with the sub-cylinder Ff, having ports b b and c, and the auxiliary piston E, carrying the main valve D, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a valve-gear for steam-pumps, the pivoted lever G, deriving its motion from the piston-rod C, the stud G2, fastened in segmental slot G, the connecting-link H, the valve-rod F, and the auxiliary sliding valve F, provided with diagonal cavities d and c, in combination with the sub-cylinder E, having ports bb and c, and the auxiliary piston E, carrying the main valve D, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a valve-gear for steam-pumps, the auxiliary piston E, the sub-cylinder E, having the ports b and b and the exhaust-port c, in combination with the auxiliary sliding valve F, provided on its under side with the diagonal cavities d and d, substantially as shown and described.
4. Inavalve-gear for steam-pumps, the au iliary sliding valve F, provided on its under side with diagonal cavities d and d', in combination with the valve-rod F, the dog F, the connecting-link H, the stud G2, adjustable in the segmental slot G, and the pivoted lever G, actuated by the movement of the pistonrod C, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a valve-gear for steam-pumps, the pivoted lever G, provided on its upper end with a segmental slot, G, in combination with the stud G2, adjustable in said slot G, the connecting-link H, and the dog F",fastened tothe valve-rod F, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a valve-gear for steam-pumps, the ports b and b and exhaust-port c, arranged in a triangular form on the face of the valve-seat E2, in combination with the auxiliary valve F, having the diagonal cavities d and d on the under side of the said valve F, substantially as shown and described.
