VILLIAM J. BOLAND, OF FERRYSBURG, MICHIGAN.
STEAM-ACTUATED VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters/Patent No. 234,649, dated November 23, 1880.
Application tiled September 3, 1880.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BOLAND, ot' Ferrysburg, in the county ot' Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Actuated Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni apart ot' this specication.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved cut-ofiI mechanism for steam-valves. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the improved valve cut-oft' mechanism applied to a steam-cylinder. Fi 3 is a vertical cross-section ot' the same. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line x x in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a sectional perspective view, showing the valve cut-oft' mechanism.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to an improved cut-off valve for steam-engines, the construction and operation ot' which will be hereinafter fully described, aud particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the steam-cylinder, and B is the valvechamber.' Steam is admitted into the latter through an opening, G, centrally located in the top of said chamber.
D is a piston-valve, which consists of two cylindrical tubes, E E, connected with a stem or shaft, F, and connected by a bar, G, mention ot' which will be hereinafter made.
H is a chamber located below the pistonvalve and above the steam-cylinder, and in which the slide-valve I is placed. The latter consists of a plate, J, provided upon its under side with two recesses, K L, and having an upward-proj ectin g stem, M, titting or adjusted in a recess, N, in bar G, by the shoulders of which it is alternately reciprocated. y
From the chamber H passages O P communicate, respectively, with the ends of the steam-cylinder. Said passages communicate, respectively and alternately, with the exhaustport Q through the recesses K and L in valve I.
R and S are passages constructed below the usual manner in the steam-cylinder.
(Model piston-valve and connecting with the exhaustport Q. The said passages are open for communication with the piston-valve, as hereinafter described.
The cylindrical tubes E E ot' the pistonvalve are provided with openings It R2, which, when the valve reciprocates,.connect alternately with the exhaust-passa ges R and S.
T is the piston, which reciproca-tes in the The piston-rod is provided with an arm, U, having an eye or opening, V, which slides over the valve-stem F between two tappets, WV \V, by which the valve is started in its movements.
The operation of the invention is as follows: Steam enters at O, passes down around the bar G into the chamber H, thence under one side ofthe slide-valve I. according to its location in the chamber H, into the recess K or L, and thence through passage 0 or Pinto the steam-cylinder to operate the piston T. The steam drives the piston T to the end of the cylinder A opposite the passage at which the steam enters, and the steam in front ot' the pistou T escapes through the passage which the piston approaches under the slidevalve I and through the recess K or L, as the ease may be, into the eXhaust-openin g Q. The recesses It and S are connected with the exhaust Q, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The piston T carries the arm U with it as it is moved, and the eye V of the arm U strikes one ot1 the tappets W and starts the pistonvalve D, which is moved until steam from the chamber' H can pass through the opening It' or R2, as the case may be, to drive the pistonvalvc D in its proper direction. The shoulders on the bar G strike the stem M ot' the slide-valve I, and both the slide-valve Iand the piston-valve D are driven simultaneously in the same direction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a steam-engine, the combination, with the steam-cylinder A, provided with the piston T, having arm U, ofthe piston-Valve D, consisting ot' the bar G, recessed at N, and having the tubes E E, provided with openings R R2 at opposite ends thereof, the passages R and S, communicating with the exhaust IOO opening Q, the chamber H, und the sliding my own I have hereto aixed my signature in valve 1, having stem M und recesses K and L, presence of two witnesses. the said sliding vulve I and the piston-vulve T L L D both moving simultaneously in the same VIL IAM J B0 ABD 5 direction, constructed and operating` suhstan- Witnesses:
l tially us and for the purposes set forth. JAMES BROWN,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I CHARLES CHRISTMAS.
