GRINDING DEVICE HAVING INTEGRALLY MOUNTED MEANS FOR PROFILING THE GRINDING WHEEL Filed May 8, 1965 4 Sheets-Sheet 4 I NVENTOR KA RL M/S'GERL 5 BY 0M WW ATTORNEYS United States Patent GRINDING DEVICE HAVING INTEGRALLY MUUNTED MEANS FOR PROFILING THE GRINDING WHEEL Karl Magerle, Im Vorderen 'Erb 1, Kusnacht,
Zurich, Switzerland Filed May 8, 1963, Ser. No. 278,823 9 Claims. (Cl. 125-11) This invention relates in general to grinding wheel devices and in particular to a new and useful grinding wheel apparatus including means in the apparatus for rollingin or profiling the grinding wheel by a profiling wheel which is mounted in proximity thereto, and including means for supporting the outer end of the grinding wheel shaft during the rolling-in process.
The invention has particular application to a so called rolling-in device, particularly for grinding wheels and discs of a similar character. The prior art rolling-in devices are generally secured either on a table which is movable in a longitudinal direction and which carries the workpiece which is operated upon by the grinding wheel, or the rolling-in device is secured at the grinding wheel support. Generally, the rolling-in of the grinding wheel or disc is accomplished by moving or advancing the rolling-in" device relative to the grinding disc. In prior art devices the grinding disc is generally mounted in a cantilever or overhung manner and during the rollingin of the grinding disc pressures of about 100 kilograms for 10 mm, width of grinding disc occur dependent on the hardness of the structure of the grinding disc.
Due to the unpreventable play in the spindle head guides, the grinding spindle bearings, and in certain types of grinding machines also in the frame guides, certain disc deviations in the maintenance of the parallel alignment of the axes of the profile roll and the grinding wheel or disc take place during the rollingdn procedure. These deviations produce errors or variations in the grinding Wheel which, of course, will be transferred to the workpiece and may reach a magnitude of about 0.1 mm.
With prior art devices of this nature it was not possible to prevent the unevenness of the formation of the grinding wheel by the rolling-in wheel, and any variation in the surfaces of the grinding wheel produced the double undesirable result of incorrect formation of the workpiece and the rapid deterioration or wear of the grinding wheel due to the fact that the deviation in the surface caused grinding only in localized areas.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a new and unusual arrangement of grinding wheel where a shaft is supported for rotation at one end, and the opposite end projects through an opening in a depending portion of a frame member which carries the rolling-in device. The arrangement is such that the rolling-in device is rotatably mounted in the frame member and abuts the grinding disc, leaving the area below free for positioning the workpiece below the grind ing disc. Means are provided for making adjustment of the rolling-in device so that it may be positioned or fed under control of a knob adjustment toward or away from the grinding disc. Means are also provided for ensuring that the outer or free ends of the grinding disc shaft becomes supported whenever the rolling-in member is made operative for the purpose of profiling the surface of the grinding disc.
In a preferred arrangement the outer free end of the grinding wheel shaft is arranged so that it may be rotatably supported in a vertically adjustable bearing which is moved upwardly into supporting position when the rolling-in device is actuated. The means for rendering the external bearing effective may be either manual or automatic and it insures that no unevenness or misalignment Patented Sept. 7, 1965 of the axis of the grinding wheel will take place during the rolling-in operation.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide an improved grinding apparatus with means for rollingin the grinding disc.
A further object-of the invention is to provide a grinding device which includes a frame having means for rotatably supporting a grinding wheel and means for adjustably positioning a workpiece, and including a supporting frame for a rolling-in wheel which may be moved into and out of association with the grinding wheel at a location removed from the workpiece working area, and wherein the workpiece rolling-in frame carries means for effecting the support of the outer free end of the shaft of the grinding disc whenever rollingdn operations are to be effected.
A further object of the invention is to provide a grinc ing device which is simple in design, rugged in construction and economical to manufacture.
The various features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages and specific objects attained by its use, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which there is illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of a grinding machine constructed in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 2 is a partial vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged partial front elevation and partial sectional view of a portion of the grinding machine indicated in FIG. 1; and
FIG. 4 is a schematic switching diagram indicating the operation of the rolling-in device.
Referring to the drawings in particular, the invention embodied therein comprises a grinding device with a machine frame 1 carrying a cross slide 2 and a longitudinal slide 3. A workpiece 4 is mounted on the 1ongitudinal slide for positioning in association with a grinding disc 5. The grinding disc 5 is mounted on a support 6 which is-mounted on the frame 1 for vertical adjustable movement. The advance movement of the support 6 and thus of the grinding disc 5 relative to the workpiece 4 is accomplished in a known manner by means of a threaded spindle (not shown) which engages a portion of the support 6.
In accordance with the invention an element or frame 7 is arranged at the support 6 and it forms a carrier for a rolling-in device or grinding wheel profiling tool generally designated 40.
The rolling-in device consists of a motor 8 which is arranged to drive via a coupling generally designated 9 and bevel gears 10 and 10, a rolling-in wheel or roll 11. The coupling 9 is of a telescopic nature and includes a female portion 9a and a male portion 9b which is telescopically vertically movable in respect thereto. The roll 11 is supported on a yoke 12 carried on one end of a slide element or slide 13 by means of a dovetail guide, and the slide 13 is vertically reciprocable within a tubular guide portion 14 of the element 7.
The slide 13 is driven upwardly and downwardly by means of a threaded spindle 15 which advances a nut 16 carried by the slide 13. The spindle is rotated by means of a worm gear 17 either manually through a hand wheel 18 afiixed to the shaft 21 carrying the worm, or by means of a motor 19 which is connected to the shaft 21 through a coupling 20. An indicator disc scale element 22 is mounted on the spindle 15 to provide an indication of the amount of advance for the vertical orientation of the slide 13.
In accordance with a feature of the invention, the frame 23 is secured at the member 7 by means of a dovetail guide 24 (FIG. 3). The frame 23 is provided with a U-shaped cutout 25 providing clearance space for the bevel gear 10 and the roll 11 as well as for the casing 26 therefor. In the lower portion of the frame 23 there is arranged a vertically displaceably adjustable supporting bearing 27. The supporting bearing 27 is adapted to fit beneath the shaft 28 and support the shaft at the location thereof on the outside of the grinding wheel 5 Swhenever a rollingdn operation is to be carried out. In order to provide means for adjusting the bearing 27 so that it will be operative only when the rolling-in operation is carried out, the lower surface 29 thereof is inclined :so that it may be brought into wedging engagement with a similarly defined surface of a wedge member or cone 30 which is carried at the end of the rod of a piston 31. The piston 31 is slidable in a cylinder 32 and may be moved backwardly or forwardly in a controlled direction by means of a pressurized fluid admitted through either conduit 62 or 64. Thus, depending on whether or not the fluid is admitted into the cylinder space 33 or 34, the piston 31 is moved either to the left or to the right, respectively.
A cylindrical pin 37 is secured to the other end of the Wedge member 30 and it may be moved backwardly and forwardly under the control of an adjusting nut or microscrew 39 which moves a piston 38 attached thereto correspondingly. The microscrew 39 includes indications for controlling the exact location of the adjustable bearing 27.
The shaft 28 of the grinding wheel 5 is mounted in the support 6. The support 6 is rigidly connected with the element 7 so that the frame 23 forms an additional bearing area for the shaft of the grinding disc when rolling-in is to be accomplished. This bearing support area prevents a bending of the shaft 28 when the grinding disc is subjected to high pressure contact caused by the rolling-in process. The additional bearing support forms a rigid bearing mounting for the guiding spindle to provide an independent rigid connection of the grinding spindle with the roll axis.
In FIG. 4 there is indicated a schematic switching diagram for controlling the actuation of the rolling-in device for effecting the support of the shaft 28 of the grinding disc 5. A motor 42 is arranged to drive the grinding disc 5 during the grinding operation at high speed through a pulley 66 by pressing a key 43. The key actuates a relay element 47 to start the motor 42 and cause the rotation of the grinding wheel 5 at a grinding speed. When a key 45 is actuated, two auxiliary relays 46 and 48 are switched in. The relay 48 causes movement of the motor 8 to cause driving of the roll 11 for the rolling-in process. The auxiliary element or relay 46 effects three switching operations to the relay 47 and disconnects the motor 42. The auxiliary relay 46 also supplies current to the braking member or relay 44 to thereby disconnect the armature of the motor 42 and the grinding disc 5. The auxiliary relay 46 also actuates an electromagnetic coil 49 which moves a plunger connected to a piston 50 of a magnetically ac tuated valve. The piston 50 is moved from a position determined by the force of the spring 51 into a working position compressing the spring.
In the operating position of the magnetic valve the pump 52 conveys pressurized liquid into the cylinder space 33 and causes the supporting bearing 27 to be moved downwardly out of supporting contact with the shaft 28. This is the position which is assumed when the key 43 is pushed, and the motor 42 is driving the grinding wheel 5. When the rolling-in operation is to be accomplished and the magnetic valve 49 is actuated, the pump 52 conveys pressure medium into the cylinder space 34 and thereby is rolled in.
pushes the piston 31 and the work member 30 against the underside of the bearing 27, and against the abutment 38. The adjustable bearing 27 is, therefore, raised, so that it provides a bearing support beneath the shaft 28 at the end which projects outwardly from the grinding wheel 5. In this supporting position the force which is exerted by the roll 11 on the grinding wheel 5 is taken up by the frame 23 and is absorbed at the element 7 (see FIG. 3).
As further indicated in FIG. 4, the return line from the magnetically actuated valve is indicated 53 and it conducts the pressure medium back to a reservoir 54. The lines 55 and 56 are provided for conducting the pressure medium to the respective cylinder spaces 33 and 34.
After the rolling-in procedure is completed, the key 45 is again brought to a non-actuated position, either manually or automatically, and the key 43 is switched in to start the grinding motor and bring the disc up to operational rotational speed for grinding purposes.
Due to the arrangement of the inventive supporting frame with the adjustable bearing 27 it is now possible to maintain the axes of the grinding disc 5 and of the profile roller 11 completely parallel in the rolling-in procedure. In this manner the exactness of the rollingin procedure is increased and the grinding with a grinding disc which has been rolled-in in this manner will be more exact. The rolling-in is thus independent from the structural differences of the grinding disc. The outof-roundnesses which occurred in the grinding discs of prior art constructions will thus be prevented.
The invention is not only suitable for ceramically bonded grinding discs of cylindrical profile, but can also be used in treating other shaped discs or discs of other materials, for example copper into which a diamond dust It is also possible to treat discs for the electro-erosion or other processes with the inventive rolling-in device.
While specific embodiments of the invention have been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the inventive principles, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
