Fig.7,
W m B INVENTOR J05 EPH C LAUDE SAuvET BY Qurqgws TTORNEY United States Patent Office 3,204,514 Patented Sept. 7, 1965 3,204,514 FIXING DEVICE Joseph Claude Sauvet, 6 Villa dArcueil, Vanves, France Filed May 23, 1962, Ser. No. 197,103 Claims priority, application France, May 23, 1961, 6,862 4 Claims. (Cl. 85--9) The present invention relates to a new device permitting of the rigid fixingby attachment and not by frictional adhesionof a member of any kind on a Wall of which 'one face is inaccessible, and therefore by working from one side only of the said wall.
In principle, this result can be obtained (as shown in FIGS. 1 to 4 which illustrate the general principle of the invention), by introducing into a hole C pierced in the wall A and in the part to be fixed B (see FIG. 1), a hooking member 1 having, on the one hand, a projecting portion 2 and, on the other, a keying orifice 3. This member 1 being passed into the hole C and having taken up the position defined in FIG. 2, can be held in place by a member 4 which fixes the locked position of the element 1, as shown in FIG. 3. This member 4 comprises a portion 5 which serves as a key, or a wedge, and a portion 6 which is supported against the member B. When mounted as shown in FIG. 3, this member 4 keeps the projecting portion 2 of the member 1 in a hooked position. It is then an easy matter to ensure the clamping of the member B on the wall A, for instance by means ofa small key 7 as shown in FIG. 4.
The present invention has for its object a fixing device The elementary parts of the device have been designed so as to create a unit which is easy to apply, the three basic elements viz: the hooking, locking and clamping members being previously mounted on each other ready for use.
The fixing device is constituted and characterized by: (l) A hooking member which can pass easily through the holes formed in the parts to be assembled, and having on the one hand, after the final fixing in position, a projection which engages against the inaccessible surface of the wall, and, on the other hand, an engagement for the clamping member. This engagement may be a threaded portion or a mortise or any other appropriate arrangement.
(2) A locking bushing-for holding the projection of the hooking member in its engaged position. This locking bushing comprises in principle a positioning collar or flange.
(3) A conventional clamping member (such as a nut, cam, pin, key, etc.) enabling the whole assembly to be rigidly fixed together.
By way "of explanation only and without any implied limitation, the description which follows below will show how a fixing device according to the invention can be constructed in the particular case where it is intended to fix a part B having a thickness [2 on a wall A having a thickness a (see FIG. 5), the wall and the part being pierced with a hole C having a diameter 0. In the form of embodiment disclosed hereafter, and corresponding to FIGS. 5 to 13 and 15, the clamping device used is a nut.
FIG. 6 shows in cross-section a form of embodiment of the fixing device according to the invention, in which there are again found the elements referred to in the descrip tion of the principle which forms the basis of the invention, namely:
(1) A hooking member 8; I
(2) A locking and positioning bushing 9;
(3) A clamping member, which, in the present case is a nut 10.
which employs and adapts the principle described above. 7
These members 8, 9, 10 are equivalent to members 1, 4, 7 respectively, of FIGS. 1 to 4.
The hooking member 8 (FIG. 7) is constituted in this case by a special bolt 2 with a cylindrical head 11 (which is equivalent to the projecting portion 2 in FIGS. 2-4) eccentrically arranged with respect to the shank 12 by an amount d. The diameter of this head is slightly less than the diameter 0, so as to be able to pass freely into the hole C. The shank 12 of the bolt has a diameter e and a length 1. At its extremity is provided a slot 13 for receiving a screw driver.
The locking or wedging bushing 9 (FIGS. 8 and 9) comprises a skirt 14 (which is equivalent to portion 5, in FIGS. 3 and 4) the transverse section of which is that of a crescent, the external diameter of which is c, that is to say that of the hole C and of the bolt head 8, and whose internal diameter is also c, but eccentrically shifted by a certain amount g. The result is that the thickness of the skirt in its thickest portion, that is to say in the direction of the eccentricity, is also g.
It should be observed that this value g is also the maximum value of the projection to be obtained for hooking the member 8 behind the wall A. This skirt has a length h which is equal to both the parts to be assembled (a1+b plus -a certain length taken as equal to half the dimension e of the diameter of the bolt 8 The bushing 9 comprises a flange 15 (equivalent to portion 6 in FIGS. 3 and 4) having a thickness 1'. This flange is pierced with a hole 16 (FIGS. 8 and 9) having a diameter j permitting the passage of the bolt 8. This holeis pierced eccentrically with respect to the external machining of the skirt 14 by an amount equal to g/2 and in the same direction as the eccentricity given to the internal machining of the same skirt.
It should be noted that the centres of the circles define ing the crescent of the skirt 14 are each eccentric by a quantity g/2 on each side of the centre of the hole 16 having a diameter j (FIG. 9).
In the form of embodiment disclosed of a fixing device according to the invention, the diameter of the flange is equal to 2c. In addition, the values a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k are chosen so as to have the following relationship:
able
i=2 mm.
The clamping nut 10 is of a conventional type.
FIG. 10 of the accompanying drawing shows in crosssection a fixing device according to the invention assembled and ready for use (see also the perspective view given in FIG. 15).
It will be observed that the head 11 of the hooking member 8 is mounted as an extension of the skirt 14 of the locking bushing 9 and is held in position by the clamping effect of the nut 10, which is a light clamping action simply intended to hold the parts in position.
The fixing device thus prepared can easily be introduced into the hole C made for the purpose of fixing the part B on the wall A, and to take up the position in the hole as shown in FIG. 11.
When the fixing .device is placed in the position shown in FIG. 11, it is only necessary, the bushing 9 being held in position, to rotate the booking member 8 through by means of a screw driver 17.
It will then be possible, by pulling on the nut 10, to cause the eccentric head 11 of the hooking member 8 to slide in the'eccentric bore of the bushing 9 so as to obtain the position of the parts shown in FIG; 12.
In this position, the eccentric portion of the head 11 of the hooking member 8 is applied against the inaccessible surface of the Wall A at 18, and the hooking member 8 is fixed by its head in the slide of the skirt 14. It is then easy to tighten up the nut 10 and to clamp the Whole assembly as shown in FIGS. 13 and 6. I
A large number of alternative forms of embodiment maybe given for each of the elements of-the fixing device according to the invention both as regards their shapes and their proportions. All these alternative forms remain: within the scope of the present invention, provided they comprise at least the three basic elementson which thesaid patent application is based, namely a hooking member, a locking member and a clamping member.
In this respect, the form of embodiment shown in FIG. 14 should be taken in consideration;- in that figure the hooking member is constituted by an eccentric cylindrical nut 19, and the clamping device is a conventional screw 20.
In the above example (corresponding to FIGS. -13 and- 15) a nut provides the clamping of the assembly, but
it is quite obvious that it is possible to employ either a key 7 (as shown in FIGS. 4 and 16, or a cam 21 as in FIG. 17), or any other clamping device, While remaining within the scope of the present invention.
Similarly, by utilizing the above-defined technique, it is possible to produce fixing devices according to theinvention which can'be fitted into holes of all shapes (viz. square, rectangular, polygonal, etc.) while again remain-. ing within the scope of the invention.
The invention is directed to:
(1) Fixing devices designed and constructed according to the technique described above and the example of construction which has been given.
' (2) The variations of construction having the same technique and the same principles and employing the same basic elements.
(3) The various applications and combinations of known means employed in the construction.
(4) By Way of new industrial products, the fixing bolts of all sizes and for all uses as constructed in accordance with the invention.
