Description

UNITED STATES Patented January 10, 1905.
PATENT ()FFICE.
WARREN B. WOLF, OF VVARRIORSMARK, PENNSYLVANIA.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 779,632, dated January 10, 1905. Application filed September 6, 1904. I Serial No. 223,451.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WARREN B. WOLF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warriorsmark, in the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in nut-locks; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient locking means whereby a nut may be prevented from loosening upon a bolt; and it consists in the provision of a hollow threadless nut in which a spring-actuated key is located and prevented from rotation and provided with a flexible end adapted to engage the ratchetteeth upon the nut.
The invention consists in various other details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through the bolt with the locking device thereon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the locking member. Fig. 3isa detail view of the threadless chambered nut in which the looking member is seated, and Fig. l is an end view of the nut with ratchet-teeth thereon.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a headed bolt having threads A thereon and a longitudinal groove a, cut transversely across the threads, for the reception of the locking member.
B designates a hollow chambered nut hav ing a flange B, and a slot C is formed in said flange. E designates the key or locking member, which is made, preferably, of a single piece of metal having a lug E of such a size as to engage the slot in said flange to keep the teeth from rotation, while the thickness of said key, which is circular in outline, is preferably equal to the thickness of the flange upon which it rests. One arm of said key is bent upon itself, as shown, and is made flexible, with its free end disposed in the path of the ratchet-teeth K, formed on one face of j the threaded nut K, which nut is adapted to fit the threads of the bolt in the usual manner, with theratchet-teeth facing toward the head of the bolt.
In adjusting the locking-nut, the key is inserted in the chambered nut, which is slipped over the bolt, and the lug e, projecting from the inner circumference of the key, is adapted to engage and work through the groove formed transversely of the threads, in which position the free flexible end of the key will project slightly toward the threaded end 'of the bolt, and afterward the nut with the ratchet-teethmay be screwed upon the threaded portion of the bolt, and when the ratchetteeth come in contact with the flexible end of the key said end will yield slightly and will allow the nut to tighten; but the latter will be prevented from loosening by reason of the flexible end of the key teeth.
An aperture 0 is formed in the wall of the chambered nut, through which an instrument of any suitable kind may be inserted for the purpose of depressing the flexible end of the key away from the ratchet-teeth when it is desired to have the threaded nut removed from the bolt.
While I have shown a particular construction of nut-lock embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that I may vary the details, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A nut-lock comprising, in combination with engaging the ratcheta threaded bolt having a longitudinal groove tion having ratchet-teeth thereon adapted to on the circumference thereof, a threadless nut be engaged by said pawl, as set forth. I0 fitted over said bolt, acircularkey havinglugs In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my projecting from one end thereof and adapted signature in presence of two Witnesses.
to engage respectively, a recess in said nut WARREN B. WVOLF. and groove in said bolt, 3 portion of said key Witnesses: being bent upon itself and forming a flexible DANIEL CHAMBERLAIN,
pawl, a threaded nut with a shouldered por- J. R. LEHMAN.
