MOUTH HARP.
Patent-ed June 16, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
JOHN MGMAHEL, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
MOUTH-HARP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 320,440, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed April 27, 1885.
To all 10h m it may concern:
,Be it known that I, JOHN 1\f[o.\ .[A11EL,of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mouth-Harps, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The object of my invention is to combine with the ordinary tongue of a jews-harp a plate and mouth-box, all so arranged that the user may play the instrument with much more case and comfort than the ordinary jews-harp. This object I accomplish by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my instrument. Fig. 2 is ahorizontal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the plate and reed detached.
In the drawings, A A represent the case of the instrument, which may be made of wood or metal, as may be deemed desirable. Between the pieces A A, I place a plate, E. (Shown in full in Fig. 3.) This plate E is firmly held in place between the parts A A by the screws B B. In Fig. 3 the plate 1] is. shown (N0 model.)
in full in perspective. The reed H is riveted t0 the plate by a rivet, K, and has at its end a prolongation, L, which serves as a fingerpiece for the user to play upon.
O, Figs. 1 and 2, is an opening into the chamber S, which admits of a current of air from the mouth of the player, 0 being an opening for the escape of the current of air, and is also a free space for the action of the fingerpiece L. D is an opening which may be covered by the lip to change the intensity of sound, and D is an opening which may be closed by the finger or by a sliding valve.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the plate E and reed H, having a fingerpiece, L, with the case A A, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I, J OI'IN MoMAI-IEL, have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 22d day of April, A. D. 1885.
JOHN MOMAHEL.
