SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,195, dated June 16,1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY VALK, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved \Vindow-Sash, ofwhich the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

My invention is auimprovementin the class of windows whose sashes are pivoted to independent side rails or bars that slide vertically in grooves of the window -fraine, the sashes being thus adapted to be swung vertically and placed at a greater or less angle to the side rails for the purpose of facilitating the passage of air-currents or permitting the panes to be cleaned with convenience and dispatch.

My improvement is embodied in the construction and combination of devices whereby the sashes are pivoted and secured to the sliding side rails, as hereinafter described.

In accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window sash and frame to which my inventionis applied. Fig. 2represents a strip for locking the sash to side rails. Fig. 3 is a horizontal central section of the parts shown in Fig. 1. The remaining three figures representthe pivotal connections or devices in detail and enlarged.

The side bars or rails, A, slide in vertical grooves of the window-frame B, and cords O are attached to them in the usual manner. The lower sash, D, fits between the sliding rails A, and is pivoted thereto at the middle of the length of each. \Vhen the sash D is vertical, the slots M and M formed in them and the rails A, respectively, will coincide, and the metal strip N N may then be inserted, as shown in Fig. 3, for the purpose of locking the sash and rails together.

In the above construction and combination of parts there is nothing essentially new. I will now describe my improvement.

Referring to Fig. 6, it will be seen that the pivots or pins E have enlarged heads E, and are formed in one piece with the plates F, which are provided with countersunk screwholes and secured by screws in shallow recesses in the outer sides of the side bars of sash D-that is to say, the plates F are flush with the surface of the sash and the rigid pivots project laterally at a right angle there to. The sliding bars A are provided with transverse apertures G, to receive said pivots E, and with recesses H, in their outer sides, for the purpose of accommodating the pivotheads E and the plates J J, by which latter disconnection of the pivots from rails A is prevented. Said platesJ J are each provided with a semicircular notch, K, Fig. 4:, in its inner edge, and hence when the plates are set in place in recesses H, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the coincident notches K form a circular aperture and bearing for the pivots E, whi h aperture being smaller than the heads E, it is obvious the pivots cannot be disconnected from the sliding rails A until one-or both of the plates J have been detached.

The advantages attained by this construction and combination of parts are as follows: First, the pivot-pins E and plates F, being permanently and rigidly connected, cannot be come loosened or detached by use, as not infrequently occurs in other windows of this class; second, the device composed of said parts E F is stronger than if these were made separate, and may also be manufactured at much less expense; third, since the pivots E cannot become loosened or detached from plates F they will neverproject from recesses H, so as to obstruct the free sliding movement 0f the rails A, as in other inventions of this kind; fourth, the notched plates J J enable the pivot devices and pins E F to be conveniently and quickly secured to and detached from the rails A.

I disclaim the construction and connection of parts shown in Patent No. 256,644.

\Vhat I claim is 1. The device for pivoting sash and connects ing them to sliding side rails, the same consisting of a plate, F, provided with screwholcs, and the headed pin E, which is formed solid therewith, as shown and described.
