Be it known that I, MATHIAS Sronna, of
' Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazine Fire movements of the breech-bolt; and the invention consists of a receiver or shoe at the breech end of the barrel, which is connected by an inclined well and tubular channel with a vertical magazine in the butt of the stock, and

At the middle part of the butt E is arranged the magazine E", which extends vertically through the butt, the lower part of the magazine communicating with the corresponding opening at the upper part of the tubular channel D, as shown clearly in Fig. 11. As many cartridges as may be stored in the magazine E are supplied to the same by means of a cartridge-holder of suitable construction, (not shown in the drawings,)

The slide -piece D is connected with the breech-bolt O by an intermediate.slide-rod, D, the L-shaped rear end of which engages a corresponding rear end at the front end of the slidepiece D, as shown in Fig. 12. The front end of the slide-rod D engages by aside recess, f, a lateral projection, f, at the rear end of an L-shaped slide-piece, F, the front nd, F, of which extends through aside opening, b, of the receiver and, when raised, into the path of a recessed tongue, 0, at the side of the breech-bolt C, said tongue having front and rear shoulders, a a, which engage the front end, F, of the slide-piece F, as shown in Fig. 3. The slide-piece F is guided by alongitudinal tongue, f, in a corresponding groove, f, of an intermediate covering-plate, F, which is pivoted to the rear part of the receiverB, and provided with a rearwardlyextending stoparm, f, for the rear end, a, of the tongue 0 of the breech-bolt. The forward end 'of the coveringplate F has a short areshaped slot, f which is engaged by a pin, f", of a thumb lever, F, that is pivoted at its front end to the receiver B, and provided at its rear end with alaterally-projecting thumb-rest, f by which the lever F is raised or lowered, according as the cartridgefeeding mechanism is to be thrown in or out of action. By raising or lowering the thumb-lever F the coveringplate F and thereby the slide-piece F, is also raised or lowered, and the front end, F, of the latter thrown in or out of the path of the recessed tongue 0 of the breech-bolt O. The front end of the coveringplate F is provided with a stop-pin,f that serves to arrest the forward motion of the slide-piece F. "When the front end; F, of the slide-piece F is raised, it is placed into the path ofthe recessedtongue G of the breech-bolt, as shown in Fig. 4, and the slide-piece Fthereby moved backward or forward by the reciprocating motion of the breech-bolt. This motion of the slide-pieceF is transmitted by the slide-rod D to the slidepiece D, which operates thereby the cartridgefeeding mechanism. When the thumb-lever F is lowered, the covering-plate F and slide piece F are returned into normal position, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 8, and thereby the front end of the latter moved out of the path of the recessed tongue 0 of the breech-bolt G, in which position thcfire-arm is used for single firing. WVhen the covering-plate F is in normal position, its rear arm, y, projects into the path of the recessed side tongue, 0, and serves as a stop for the same when the breechbolt is pulled back, while, when the coveringplate F is in raised position for magazine firing, the front end, F, of the slide-piece F serves as a stop for the tongue 0, as shown in Fig. 4. The slide-piece F, intermediate plate, F and thumb-lever F are covered by the stock,with the exception of the projecting thumb rest, as shown in Fig. 1. When the slide-piece D is moved backward by the action of the breechbolt and the intermediate mechanism, the guard-piece D is moved along the side wall of the open portion of the channel D, so as to lift the head of the cartridge next above the cartridge at thetime in the channel D, as shown in Fig. 11. It causes thereby the separating of the cartridge in the channel D from the next adjoining cartridge in the magazine, so that the former can be moved forward in the channel D without being interfered with by the cartridges in the magazine. By the backward motion of the slide-piece D the sleeve D is also moved back by means of the dog D so that the front part of the sleeve assumes a position back of the rim of the cartridge in the channel D, as shown in Fig. ll. When the sleeve D arrives in this position, the dog D passes over a fixed inclined lug, g, at the upper part of the rear end of the tubular channel, and is lifted by the same, so that its lug d clears the slot d of the sleeve D, as shown in Fig. 11. Simultaneously therewith the spring D throws the sleeve D forward. and impels the cartridge through the channel D and inclined well of the receiver B into the path of the breech-bolt, which then takes up the cartridge and moves it forward into the breech and holds it in proper position therein when locked to the breech, The forward motion of the breechbolt 0 niovesby theintermediate mechanism the slide-piece D forward, so that the guardpiece D clears the head of the lowermost cartridge in the magazine and permits the dropping of the cartridge into the open portion of the channel D, ready for the next action of the sleeveD which takes place when the breechbolt is drawn back to its rearmost position in the receiver, in which position uninterrupted communication is established between the breech of the barrel, well D, and channel D. By the forward motion of the breech-bolt the slide-piece D and its dog D are also moved forward, so that the latter is returned into engagement with the slot of the sleeve D by the action of the spring d, while the guard-piece D is returned into its normally-inclined position in front ofthe bottom opening ofthe magazine E as shown in Fig. 10. By the backward motion of the breechbolt G the firingpin of the same is set, the same being released by the trigger when in locked position for discharging the cartridge, as customary in bolt-guns.
When my improved fire-arm is used for singlefiring, the cartridge is inserted directly into the receiver and then moved into the breech by the forward and locking motion of the breech-bolt. The cartridge-feeding mechanism and the slide-piece by which the breechbolt is thrown into connection with the cartridge-feeding mechanism are in single firing disconnected from the breech-bolt, while for magazine firing the connecting mechanism is thrown into action by raising the thumb-lever F, whereby the slide-piece F is thrown into the path of i the side tongue of the breech-bolt C, so that the connection between the breechbolt 0, slide-piece F, intermediate rod, D", and slide-piece D is established, and thereby the consecutive automatieal forward throwing or impelling of the cartridges from the magazine into the breech of the barrel obtained. The front end of the side tongue, 0, of the breechbolt 0 is so shaped that it serves as an extractor for automatically throwing out the shells.
The magazine is adapted to store six cartridges, so that the fire-arm can deliver seven shots in succession,including onein the breech. After all the cartridges have been discharged the magazine has to be replenished, which is accomplished by arranging the cartridges in holders containing half a dozen cartridges each, which holders are so constructed that the cartridges can be quickly conveyed from the same without loss of time to the magazine.
The advantages of my improved fire-arm are, first, that the cartridges are supplied successively and automatically from the magazine in the butt by the cart-ridgefeeding mechanism by the operation of the breech-bolt; secondly, that the fire-arm may be quickly changed from single firing to magazine firing,
or viceversa; third, that the cartridge-feeding mechanism is entirely protected, so that it cannot get out of order; and, lastly, that, owing to the arrangement of the cartridges in the magazine, noaecidental explosion of the same by the concussions of the gun can take place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desiretosecure by Letters Patent- 1. In a magazine fire-arm, the combination of a reciprocating breech-bolt, a receiver or shoe having aninclined well, a tubular channel extending from the well to the rear part of the butt, a magazine located in the butt and communicating with said channel, a springactuated sleeve, aslide-piece having a springpressed dog adapted to engage said sleeve, means for releasing said dog from the sleeve, a slide-rod extending along the channel, ahorizontally guided slideplate connected to the slide-rod and adapted to be actuated by the breech-bolt so as to release or reengage the spring-actuated sleeve, substantially as set forth.
2. In a magazine firearm, the combination of the butt havinga vertical magazine, atubular channel communicating with the magazine and receiver, a spring-actuated sleeve, a slotted slidepiece, intermediate mechanism connecting the slide-piece with the breechbolt, a pivoted dog at the rear end of the slidepiece, means for'engaging the spring-actuated sleeve by the dog, and means for releasing th same, substantially as set forth.
3. In a magazine fire-arm, the combination of the butt having avertieal magazine, atubular channel communicating with the magazine and the receiver, aslotted slide-piece, in termediate mechanism connecting the slidepiece with the breech-bolt, a pivoted and springpressed guard-piece at the front end of the slide-piece, and a lug on said guard-piece adapted to engage adepression in said tubular channel for raising said guard-piece so as to separate the cartridge in the channel from the next adjoining cartridge in the magazine, substantially as described.
4. In a magazine fire-arm, the combination of the butt, avertical magazine having guideflanges for the rims of the cartridges, a tubular channel communicating with the magazine and extending from the same to the receiver, a slotted slide-piece guided in the tubular channel, a dog pivoted to the rear end of the slide-piece, a guard-piece at the front end of the slide-piece, a spring-actuated sleeve adapted to be engaged by said dog, means to release the dog from the sleeve, and means to arrest the sleeve after being released from the dog, substantially as set forth.
5. In a magazine fire-arm, the combination of the butt havingavertical magazine, atubular channel extending from the magazine to the receiver, a slide-piece having a dog at its rear end, a spring-actuated sleeve adapted to be engaged by said dog, means for releasing the dog from the sleeve, an intermediate sliderod, a slide-piece pivoted sidewise of the receiver, a breech-bolt having a recessed side tongue, and means whereby the front slidepiece is thrown in or out of the path of the re-' cessed tongue of the breech bolt, substantially as set forth. r
6. In a magazine fire-arm, the combination of a reciprocating breech-bolt having a recessed side tongue, a pivoted thumb-lever, a pivoted covering-plate operated by said lever,
an L-shaped slide-piece guided by said covcessed side tongue, a pivoted thumb lever, a pivoted covering-plate operated by said lever, an L-shaped slide-piece guided by said covering-plate and adapted to be raised or lowered by the same, a slide-rod connected to the L-shaped slide-piece, a slide-piece connected to the slide-rod, a dog pivoted to the slide piece,a guided and spring -actuated sleeve, and means to release the dog from the sleeve, so as to produce the quick forward impelling of the sleeve, substantially as set forth.
