DRILLING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,053, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed March 21, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, WEsLEY DOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hicksville, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drilling-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in drilling-machines; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation ofa drilling-machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 4 isa vertical sectional view taken on the line x a: of Fig. 1
A represents a frame, which consists of a bent bar having the vertical standard B and the horizontal slide-bar O, on which is fitted the sliding jaw D, that is provided with a setscrew, d, for binding the sliding jaw to the slide-bar at any desired point. An internallyscrew-threaded sleeve, b, is formed on the upper end of the standard B, and through this sleeve passes a horizontal hollow screw, E, having a left-hand thread. To theinner end ofthe screw E is secured a collar or shoulder, e, from which projects a stud, c. A ratchet-wheel, F, is secured to the outer end of the screw, as shown.
G represents a rod that passes through the screw, and is provided at its inner end with a bit-stock, H, having a set-screw, h. The inner end of the bit-stock is reduced to the diameter of the collar e, and on this reduced portion of the bit-stock slides a clutch, I, which is secured to the bit-stock by a stud, h', that projects from the bit-stock and enters a slot, t', that is formed in the clutch. The inner side of the clutch is provided with a series of notches, t', that engage with the stud e', and thereby secures the rod G and the screw E together when the clutch is moved toward the standard B, and disconnects the rod and the screw when the clutch is moved in the A spring, e2, is secured to the inner side of the sliding collar and bears against the reduced portion of the bitan eccentric, K, to the outer face of which and to the rod G is secured a collar or washer, L, on the outer side of which collaris a notched wheel, M.
N represents a yoke, in which works the eccentric K, and which bears between the washer L and the ratchet-Wheel F. An arm, n, extends from the upper side of the yoke, and an arm, n', extends from the lower side thereof. A horizontal rod, O, extends inwardly from the lower end of'the arm a', and is journaled in bearings b', that project from oneside of the standard B. The rod O thus forms the fulcrum for the yoke.
P represents a pawl that is made in the form of a compound curve. This pawl is pivoted centrally to the inner side of the arm n of the yoke below the ratchet-wheel F, and has one extremity, p, that is adapted to engage with the ratchet-wheel, and an opposite extremity, p', that by its weight causes the extremity p to engage with the ratchet-wheel. A spring, R, is coiled around the rod O, andis connected to the pawl P, and keeps said pawl in position when either of the extremities thereof are in contact with the ratchet-wheel. To the upper end of the arm n is pivoted a pawl, S, which engages with the ratchet-wheel at the upper side thereof. A spring, T, is secured to the arm n, and is curved as shown. The free end of this spring passes through an opening that is made in the pawl, and either bears downwardly against the pawl or retains said pawl in a raised position out of contact with the ratchet-wheel.
U represents a crank that is loose on the outer end of the rod G, and V represents a double pawl that is pivoted to the crank, as at o, and has the arm Vand the points Vl and V, which are adapted to engage with the notched wheel M. A bent spring, W, is secured in bearings on the inner side of the crank and engages with the arm V of the pawl V.
The operation of my invention is as follows: A bit, X, is placed in the bit-stock and clamped by the screw. The piece of metal to beborcd is placed against the inner face of the sliding jaw, and the jaw' is then moved on the slidebar until the metal to be bored is in contact With the point of the drill or bit,when the jaw is clamped to the slide-bar by the set-screw d. rIhe clutch I is disengaged from the screw E, the pawls l? and S are set to engage with the ratchet-wheel F, and the pawl V is set so that the point V2 engages with the notched wheel M. The crank is then turned in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3. As the rod G rotates the bit, the eccentric moves the yoke back and`forth,so'as tocause the pawls l? and Sto move the ratchet-wheel F one notch to every revolution of the bit. The movement of the ratchet-Wheel carries the screw E with it, which' feeds the bit against the block of metal that is being bored, as will be very readily understood. l
In order to withdraw the bit, the clutch is moved so as to connect the rod G and the screw E together, the pawls P and S are caused to disengage the ratchet-wheel F, the pawl V A drilling-machine thus constructedis easily operated,and is thoroughlyl efficient in opera` tion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the frame, the hollow screw, the ratchetlwheel fast therewith, the rod passingthrough the hollow screw and having the bit-stock atone end, the clutch for securing the hollow screw and the rod together, the eccentric and notched wheel fast to the rod, the crank loose onsaid rod, the yoke fulcrumed to the frame and operated by the eccentric, the pawls pivoted to the yoke and engaging with the ratchetwheel, and the pawl secured to the crank and engaging with the'notched wheel, substantially as describcd.
